I have rattle coming from my transfer case. Well, i have done the search for it. And it appears to be my linkage chain needs some adjusting. Now, does anyone know how much money i will need to dump into parts? Also, my schudule that i work is kinda tough to make time to work on my XJ. Is this probelm a huge one. Like, say if i dont get around to fixing it until the spring will it cause further damage. Thanks

uh.. your XJ does not have a "linkage chain" . you have mechanical linkage and a chain inside the trasnfer case.. VERY difeent items.

what exactly is the noise?

well my bad i thought they said linkage chain. But, i have a rattle coming from underneath the t-case shifter. It only happens in 2 Hi and sitting at a stop light.

you might want to either change the chain or go ahead and find another x-case in good condition. This is going to need to be done pretty soon. worst case, the chain will partly jump over the drive gears, get stuck between the case housing and the gears, and then break the case housing because of a lack of room for the chain to go around the gear, and now, you get to tow the XJ to whereever to fix it. Me, i think that i would find some way to be able to change the chain, or the case, either way, it should only take a couple of hours to do.

you posted while i was typing, so try this- get under the jeep, and check the linkage for the x-case shifter for sloppiness. you might be missing abushing in the part of the linkage that crosses over from the tranny area to the body.
