4.5 lift Tire Clearance

I have a rusty's 4.5 inch lift on my xj and i was thinking about getting wither 31 or 32 inch tires....it says that 32x11.5 are the max with that lift......i was wondering how much travel i will have wiht the tires if i use the largest size....will my tires barely be fitting in the wheel well or what? If i go with a 31x10.5 will the tiers look awkward cus they're too small or will you not be able to tell? Will the 31's give me more travel space in my well?

cut and you'll have plenty of room for even 33s. its all a matter of whether or not you'll trim and then adjust your bumpstops to fit. 4" or so is plenty of uptravel.

I have 33x12.50s and Rusty's 4.5" lift. It was fine for the most part, but some rubbing when I was at full flex. Trim a bit and 33's are fine.

Im running 32's with very minimal rubbing at full stuff offroad. I trimmed the bottom of the stock flare and it solved the problem and you can barely tell its trimmed.

here's my response from a thread a few weeks back...

IMO, it all depends on what type of driving/offroading you will be doing. after i installed the 4.5" lift and 32x11.50's, i thought i was good to go. as far as bumpstops, the only ones i installed were the front bumpstops that came with the RE lift. and none in the rear. i had pleanty of room for around the town driving.

but once i went offroad and disconnected my swaybars, that all changed. i had to remove my flares to even before i tried to flex.

here are some pics i've taken in the past to help answer these questions ...

all pics linked to kelp 56k'ers

for reference, here's how far the 32x11.50's stick out when mounted on 15x8 rims with 4" of bs'ing...
with flares...

w/out flares...

first offroad trip...
no bumpstops in rear and rear not completely flexed out. almost no room left...

front fully flexed out...

if i had turned the wheel in the slightest, i would have bent up my fenders

so i broke out the hockey puckes and added bumpstop to the front and that helped out tons...

...but left the rear alone...

that wasn't a good idea...

so i got out the metal tools and trimmed the fenders front and rear and relocated the flares up to make the va 5-oh happy. now i have ZERO rubbing with running a little bumpstop up front and trimming front and rear...

i have a set of dpg rear bumpstop plates that will be going in when i go up to 33's with this lift/setup.

hope my experiences/pictures help you out.

i ran 31's and rubbed, after trimming for tj flares i run 33's

31's on a 4.5 inch lift look silly...even without trimming. Go with 32s, or 33s and either bumpstop it or trim...or a little of both.
Oh do they now?

Granted, I am looking forward to wering these out eventually and going to 33's or 35's if I re-axle to 9"/D44, still on D35/D30 open/open for now.....

btw, those pics give you an idea of actual travel, Flexed right to the stops up front and the 31's clear the fenders by about 1/2". Biggest issue I have is that my LCAs and UCAs are nice and straight, but the front axle is about an inch off center to pass side, so I rub the lca before i ever get to wheel lock turning left.
