I have a np231 with currie sye and also a very nice 242 with very low miles on it...I know RE makes a sye conversion for the 242..which one should I keep and use in teh new MJ truck?

231 would be nicer in the MJ IMHO.

since the 231 is a bit stronger I would stick that thing in the pickup since you might be towing stuff, and just put the 242 in the xj. You really dont need full time in the MJ as you would in a XJ. buts it boils down to your call. :)

the 242 is only rated weaker when it is in 4wdFULL due to the planetary.....otherwise, the 231 and 242 are mechanically identical in the other modes. the common weakspot is the speedo gear.

I'd run the 231 for 2 reasons.

1: better aftermarket support

2: better ground clearance

.........242 case has more "ribbing" too.

Most of us 231 owners love to rib on the 242......good point

:laugh2:

OK the case has more structural ribbing, I wonder if the front case half would swap over to a 231? I've got a busted 231 at home I'll take a peek.

Nope, aint going to happen. The 242 is much bigger than the 231.

Haden't even thought about that, of course the 231 case parts I have are about 1/3 of the size they originally were
