What kinda milage are you all getting with your various rigs? That is to say Running 35's with 4:10 or 4:56 gears etc.
Currently I am running 32's with the stock R&P and getting about 14mpg........

My last tank was 16mpg. Which has been the best yet. Usually I get 14-15 or so. I have 33s 4.10s and an auto. I think my mileage will increase when I regear.

I was averaging 20.5 mpg STOCK (AW4, 242, 3.55 gears, 225 x 70 x 16 tires) I installed 30" tall tires and dropped down to 18 mpg.
I'm going to re-gear (eventually) and I'm tossing around the idea of a 4.10 OR 3.73..... 3.73 brings me back to the same RPM'S that I had stock. A 4.10 is 2 axle sizes up. I would go with 3.90's but they don't offer them in Dana 35's.
I certainly don't want to drop down to 14/15mpg, since this is my daily driver (60+ miles round trip to work) :( Anybody else running 3.73 or 4.10's with 30" tall tires? What are you getting for MPG?
BTW....I checked my speedo for error after I installed my 30" tires, my old OEM Goodyears were 28.25" tall. I checked speed on GPS......IT WAS RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!!

BLUTO :)

Do you think that if I went to 3.73's, I'd get most of my milage back?

18 mpg with 30 x 9.50 procomp muds, stock motor, 3:55's, AW4 on the freeway & city streets (50/50 mix). 20 mpg on 75+ mph freeway runs.

I get 13-14 in my '91 auto 32's & 3.55's and then 20-22 in my '95 5-speed 3.07 225/75-15. Remember that if your speedo is off from regearing or larger tires, your mpg is also off by the same %.

When I owned an '89, 5-speed, 235x75x15 tires I averaged about 20-21 MPG combined driving. I got about 25 on highway trips.

My '92 with 32x11.50x15 tires, auto, stock gears gets about 12-13 in winter and 15-16 MPG in summer.

I gave up a while ago...... with my 98 ax15 with 4.11's and 31's I get about 15 to 19 depending on the phase of the moon, the quality of the gas (seems that quality goes down when price comes down) and how long has it been since I dumped the container of the injector cleaner into the tank..

Now I drive about 120 miles round trip each day in the morning flying at about 80 in the afternoon... well... let's just say that I drive all across Los Angeles down 5 south....

Oh... it seems that my cone filter has improved mileage a bit for me as well as the bosch 4+ plugs..... (alkthough it is a possibility that it was the fact that they were new, but... the ones that I pulled out didn't look too bad...)

I get 15-16 around town and about 18-19 on the highway. I have 3.07's with 31's. I also have the TB spacer and I noticed a slight improvement in power and mileage after putting it on.

Apx 14-18. My speedo and tach is off due to 31s, so I est it a little. I do monitor each tank though.

This is a 95 w/Rusty's TB spacer, intake, and cat back. MSD coil and Magnacore wires. I can't say that any of these helped milage noticably. What did help recently was adding an oil 'stabilizer' or additive from Napa called 'Lucas." Quicker starts and more mpg.

Hey Bluto, if your speedo was off before w/ smaller tires, and now is right on, than doesn't that mean your perceived mpgs were skewed to start with?

I get 15.7 around town with 33's and 4.56's.

15-16 mpg with 33's and 4.88's....of note...when I lifted it and installed the tires with the stock 3.73's the milage fell to less than 10...after the regear, back to normal...

Now that the gauge is working right again. On the highway with 4.11 gears/AW4/33x10.5 BFG AT's I am getting between 18.8-20mpg. I do have bored throttle body, K&N, Tornado, Snorkle, Borla Exhaust and high flow cat. These all can help the mpg if you don't have a heavy foot. Juice

what's wrong with home made airtubes?

It was just a response to his tornado comment. Just poking at him........ :twak:

I used to have a home made airtube, but it was sucking up way too much water when crossing deep rivers. The OEM airbox takes some time to fill up, giving you an oppurtunity to throttle out before hydro-locking your motor.

hmmmm haven't look at it that way... maybe it's time for me to fab up a snorkel out of PVC? My XJ is starting to loose it's decent looks due to the pinstriping, cutting, and herculiner... so the pvc probably won't matter too much more :)

No comparison.

I make no claims of horsepower increase or cooler intake charge. Just - chicks dig it

And I try to avoid the deep water. Too many worries of changing diff fluid and rusty bearings, etc. Too much work for an old fart wheeler.

I realized that too, I'm not sure if this "formula" is correct....or even accurate ;) , but: 28" tire/2" difference = 14%. So my computer (Limited) thought I was going 75mph when I was really going 66 mph (66 + 14% = 75). If I were to deduct 14% from 20.5 mpg then I really got 17.63 mpg:eek: in a stock vehicle! But even there, I don't think THAT is a reasonable formula. Because now that I have 2" larger tires AND the GPS says my speed is RIGHT ON, I'm getting 18+ mpg on the same computer....my milage should of dropped further!
I did notice a gain of 1mpg when I switched to Mobil1 10W-30 ;) . I also run Bosch platinum+4 plugs, no wires, distributor, or cap to upgrade....coil on plug ignition. I plan on changing to Rusty's 3-chamber Flowmaster and better intake tube.

Does anyone run K&N's intake tube? It has a cone filter and heat shield, then pipe running to TB....where it turns into a "pancake" to cover TB. You can buy this for $200 + shipping from JC Whitney after 15% discount.
Otherwise it's homemade airtube for me too ;)
BLUTO :)

I don't think the K&N intake tube is worth the $200.... If you already are running an air tube, fab a heat shield :D That's what I'm planning...

I am happy to say that I got 18.2mpg this weekend. This is the best yet and all I did was have the alignment done. The toe in was way off they said. That is with 33s 4.10s and an auto. I figured I would never see better than 16. I have a k&n drop in filter Borla header new cat Rustys flowmaster exhaust and some Ford injectors.

Thought I would share.. and it drives sooo nice and straight now too..

4.5" lift, 32x11.50 bfg at KO's, stock gears, auto, rusty's air tube, cat back exhaust

I get 16.5 - 18.5 most of the time. One time on a trip to Vegas (from San Diego) I cruised at 55 to 60 mph and got 25.2 mpg!

Very true... I was trying for high gas mileage..... very light foot, drive close behind larger vehicles when possible, and with stock gearing and 32's, those RPM's were very low!
