I recommend K&N. I've used them on everything I've owned from family cars to quads to race cars.

Try not to over oil your K&N if you get one. It tends to mess with some sensors, it can gum them up, at least on some of the newer GM trucks and cars it does.

Depends on where you take your XJ.
K&N is great for everyday driving and if you spend most of your time out of the dirt. I ran a K&N for a while but then looked in the air tube after a wheeling trip that was really dusty.....tube was lined with silt. And yes I oiled and maintained it properly.
You might consider these if you spend more time off pavement....
