Be a bit more specific. If you have two nodes [machines] and want to transfer files between them, they are both running windows, they both should be members of the same workgroup, have to have a 'to' file system shared and thats it. Right click 'my computer', properties, second tab is where the workgroup is setup. If they are both XP home machines the default is 'workgroup' in which case you just need to share out a directory.
If one is a linux box and one is a windows box you can ftp from the windows box to the linux box or you can configure samba on the linux box and do the share thing as you do in windows.
You could install filezilla server on both machines and ftp back and forth between windows machines.

You are missing a protocol.
I assume these are Windoze boxes.
Once they are in the same workgroup, you need to install NETBEUI on the boxes so that they can share without a managed network.

NETBEUI isn't necessary.

Sure it is, otherwise you have an unmarked hazard to navigation. Getting nets tangled in props is not a good thing.
