Here's the deal...my brother found an old beater XJ for me the other day out his way. Between the time he first looked at it and the time he got around to finally talking to the owners, the XJ got vandalized. My brother finally got in contact with the owners. They said the insurance co. totalled it out and is going to pick it up tomorrow. But the damage was small in my opinion. Not enough to not want it. Anyway, does anyone know or have attempted to buy a rig in this situation? It would be my beater so I'm not worried (to an extent) about the condition. But how does it work now that the ins. company bought it? Do I contact the ins company?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

There will be a case number for all claims. Talk to the owners, get the case number, call their insurance comapny and find out what they do with totaled vehicles. I know State Farm and USAA auction off anything that is 25% decent. Most of the time you will have to travel to the auction site, pay with cash and tow/haul away at time of purchase.

unless you can con the owner into doing a buy back from them with your money...it will go to an insurance auction.

Didn't think of that. I only know this much because I had that option when I was in a wreck, the other peoples' insurance told me what to do.

questions on insurance options, the wrecking industry, and all this type of fun stuff....

I'm your man.

don't hessitate to get in touch.

They still have the buy back option even if they've cashed the check they received.

You should also add some compensation to the owner since HE will have to do some footwork on your behalf.

ALOT of insurance companies base the buy back rate at the anticipated value of other rigs, hit in similar fashion and what they sell for at auction.

Others just throw out a figure.

Good luck.

Once it hits the tow truck...it's a done deal.

thanks tons for the info. my brother is going to try to contact them tomorrow before they send out the rollback for it.

i'd really be nice to get it cause it's a 87' xj wagoneer woody. it's in really good shape. he took pictures for me and i was amazed that they totalled it. it wasn't in a wreck. someone slashed all the tires and cut up the seats a bit. but nothing i'd consider totalled. heck, i've still got the stock rims/tires from when i lifted mine. and seat covers are cheap. oh yeah, and it's got a d44 ;)

sure doesn't look totalled to me :dunno: but it sucks that i was soooo close to getting it. just to have it slip through my figners :(

would take much to total it.

1. tires and balancing....$500.00 give or take.
2. New seats...they will not use used in a rig that old....800.00 redone at a upohlstry shop.

figure 1300.00 (give or take)...I bet it doesn't book for much more than that.

You should be able to get it for a song.

general rule of thumb is they won't repair a car when the estimate is 50-60 % of retail value.

YMMV...as there are always extenuating circustances.

I'd be suprised if they came back at anymore than $400.00.

have him make the call 1st thing at 8am. slip him $100.00 if you have to.

Money is a beautiful motivation.

You flash $100.00 at me over a deal like that...I'm on the phone before it's outta your wallet.

unfortunatly, my brother didn't get their phone number. and he works days. so it's very doubtful that we'll get to talk to him before the rollback comes :(

Damn, that's a nice Wagoneer.

I say you offer them cash. Maybe there's a way they can change their minds with the insurance company.

Offer them a reasonable price. Looks like $1200-1500 to me.

Don't let that deal slip away. That's one clean looking XJ.

if they cashed the check the deal has been consumated, and it belongs to the insurance company to do with what they will.

Buy back is the ONLY option.

I don't want to be an ass, but I say forget about it. I think this is common when youre trying to buy a used car, you find a cherry one but somehow don't complete the sale. Plus, it is after all, an 87 Wagoneer, I take it you are looking for some sort of parts Jeep or just a beater, but there are others. And it has simulated wood trim and chromed rearview mirrors, I know some people have different tastes in cars but that screams granny wagon. If it were an MJ Comanche it would be worth the trouble.

I know it has a D-44. It may be too late, but you could possibly talk them into letting you swap axles. Or find out what junkyard its going to and hopefully it will be a u-pull one. The ones around here have fixed prices- i.e. cylinder head is $30 iron, $40 aluminum doesn't matter if it came off a Porsche 944 or a ford probe. You should look into these places, sometimes D44s wind up there and theyll want under $100 for it.

mylt1, thanks for the heads up on the full-sized. but not what i'm looking for right now.

bajacalal, i know. it's not the end all of xj's. but it's like one of those old troll dolls. they're ugly at first and to most, but if you keep lookin at them, they kinda grow on you. i'd want it for more of the novalty value than anything else.

besides, i'd be giving the d44 to my brother to replace his d35 in his xj that he's building up.

Fitch,
I just scored a '44 in my local u-pull over here for $40 last week. If you want (and don't end up getting that woody) I can keep my eye out for another one for you/your brother. Lemme know....
