Front Drive Shaft Lengths

Does anyone know if the front drive shafts are the same length with the 231 and 242? If not, which one is longer. I'm looking for the longest one I can get. I've searched and came up with the 4.0/AW4 combo but I haven't found which t-case.

Thanx

I'd think if one would be longer it would be from an NP231. I know you can use it in the rear with around 5" of lift.

The t-case style doesn't matter....it's the tranny that makes the difference.

The auto tranny front shaft is longer than the manual by a couple inches.

True but the NP 231 is 1 3/4 longer than the NP242 in any transmission T-case combo.
So you want the AW4/NP231 combo

The 231 and the 242 both use the same front shaft.

x2. I had the same question when I went to pull a front shaft from the yard for use in the rear when I do my sye. I came up with one from a 242 equipped xj, and I have the 231 in mine. I pulled my front shaft to compare and they are identical down to the last detail.
