I cant ID my xfer case

The easy way to tell is to look at your front drive shaft. If it is about an inch in diameter and connects to the transer case with a flange, not a ujoint, you definately have an NP207. They are not as strong as an NP231. I wheeled one for several years with my 4 banger. They can be switched to an NP231, but you will need different drive shafts, like the ones on the vehicles with NP231's. There is about an inch difference in length in the shafts.

An 86 5-speed will be a 207 unless it has already been swapped. The Selec-Trac was only offered with automatic.

The 207 can be replaced with an early 21-spline 231. As Old_Man wrote, there are minor differences in drive shaft length you will have to account for.
