what gears?

i was just lookin at a 84 XJ cheif with a 2.5 4cyl commander engine and auto tranny. its got a d30 up front and the d35 out back. i was wonderin what geras would be in it? 4.10? 4.56 maybe?

4.10, 4.56, could be anything especially on the first-year XJ. Spin 'em and count, or open it up and look at the gears.

probably 4.10s , the 4.56 were rare . but you might be lucky . check the tag on the diff . if it is gone you can call your local dealership and talk to the service guys or the parts guys . they can find out what it is using your vin #

thanks guys. i found it at a local yard so i might grab it so when i up size tires, i already got a front done and ready. the diff tags long gone, but maybe ill get lucky lol. best part is that it was short money

Unlikely to be 4.56. Could be 4.10 but probably 3.73, and might be 3.31. The auto was a 3-speed with no overdrive, so they didn't go as deep with the gears on those as they did on 5-speeds.
