I have an '88 & '93.
I just picked up my new(32K mi.) 2000 Sport 4.0L this last week. I noticed that it does not have any insulation attached to the underside of the hood like the older models do. The question that I have is: Do you think that taking out the insulation from my older XJs would make the engine run cooler? Other than getting a little noiser, would there be any other disadvantages to removing the insulation?

No...you have it the other way around. The insulation does nothing for the engine, what it does do is allow for less sound transmission from the engine bay as well as protect the hood paint from the engine heat. Personally I think its a good thing to have but not necessary.

None of mine (87,89,93,95) have had insulated hoods. That's not to say it isn't a good idea, but I don't think it was standard, unless it was part of an option package.

My 88 has a hood pad (88 Wagoneer XJ). Chrysler got cheap and eliminated them for cost cutting.

Must be a trim level thing. Our padless ones have been two base models, a Pioneer and a Sport.

My 88 XJ Pioneer has hood insulation, so the Pioneer came with it. I have my XJ in the body shop but took off the interior door trim to save myself some $ on the paint job, you know less labor to remove door handles before they paint.

Anyway, I have the door trim off and see cast into the panel and normally covered by the door handle is some writing saying "Pioneer-Chief". So not sure where Pioneer falls in the pecking order but the interior door trim is the same for the Pioneer and the Chief.

I will say by looking at the window sticker in my file and reading the owner's manual the Pioneer had nearly every option/feature listed.

Also rockauto shows all models of 88 XJ - base, Chief, Loredo, & Pioneer - could of come with the 4 or 6 cylinder. The Limited only came with the 6 cylinder.

Someone like Eagle could give the definitive answer on the sequence of trim levels.

i always leave it on the vehicle until it starts to break down or look nasty.. i had an old monte carlo that had one made of looser formed fiberglass like house insulation, when it started to break down it was clogging my air filter and making a mess evrywhere under the hood.. my two 87's and 85 all have it. it was removed from my 99 before i got it..
