I want to buy a sub and a amp. I want to run the amp through my speakers and the sub. Would a 3 channel do? Dont want blasting noise just something to make my stock speakres stop clipping and to run a 8" sub in the future. 500W be enough?

500W is almost more than enough for an 8" sub and your speakers.

That's not a sub, it's an amp.
Also, get a line output converter to convert your stereo's speaker level output to line level RCA outputs.

get a better head unit with a subwoofer pre-out. That or apply some audio genius to grab low freqs off a speaker wire.

Each channel from the amp powers a separate speaker. You often see mono amps used with single subwoofers for peak efficiency; two subs then means two amps. Multiple channel amps can be used to run multiple speakers. Typically, with each speaker, the signal is reduced onefold. So a 200W 2 channel amplifier will send 100W down each channel. A 200W 4 channel amplifier will send 50W down each channel. There is considerably more to consider, but this is a start...

Edit: OT friggin beat me to it AGAIN!

I think he meant to put amp instead of sub

Oh, and those RCA jacks are the amp's inputs. It's outputs are still going to be made for your speakers.

I'm sorry I tell everyone this, but take it to a shop and let them do their magic. I worked for a shop doing installs and they wont steer you wrong.

haha wont steer you wrong? That's about the funniest thing I have ever heard. Might be like that in Maine but in good ol' San Diego they just love ripping you off (try to at least.) Gotta love those stereo guys.

Well Im in Maine, and so is the origional poster, so thats where I was going with it.

Yeah, go to Sound Effects on Washington Ave in Auburn. Tell Scott that the kid that use to work for him sent you and and I know he'll hook you up with a good price (not that his prices arent already the best around). And if your local, I can give him a heads up, I'll probubly be there this weekend putting a remote starter in my Jeep. But seriously, Scott is the guy to see, he use to be the manager of Radio City in Portland when that store existed. (I dont know where in Maine you are though). If your interested and I hope you are, send me a PM and I can get you more info and stuff.

Yeah, I meant amp. Im not THAT audio illiterate (sp?)

The six jacks that are there are all for audio input, so the output will be the line of screws that I can hook my speakers too? Or will I need to convert my speaker wires to RCA?

No, two sets of the jacks are for input, one set is a pass-through preamp output (for sending the signal directly to another amp)

If you do not have a headunit with RCA outputs, you have the option of using the speaker-level input on the amp.

and yes, you will use the screw terminals for the speaker wire.
