Attaching Skid Plate

I need to attach a home built transfer case skid plate to my 1990 Jeep Comanche. Bolting to the cross member is not a problem but how can I attach to the frame rails?? I thinking that I could weld a piece of 1/4 plate to the the frame rail than drill and tap. Has anybody any suggestions???

my tcase skid came with some nice fine threaded self tappers have abused the hell out of it with no problem

I've got the DPG Skid. It bolts to the Crossmember with self tappers as well as the outsides of the frame rails using self tappers. They've held up fine.
