tranny swap??????

i have a 89 2x4 xj 4.0 i6 with a aw4. it has a 5.5 chopped fenders bedlined interior and flat black spray paint exterior (soon to be mil-spec od green). anyway i bought a 85 2 door POS for parts, ive alresdy swapped the front axle and the new lift into mine but i wanted to know if the tranny is compatible. its a carbed 4 cyl. with a maual trans sorry for the lack of details on the donor. if you know whether it will fit or if theres an adapter that can be bought or made that would be rad, i cant afford a new t-case and tranny right now.

The stick behind the 4 banger is not readily compatible, and is not strong enough for the 4.0L. It is an AX-4 or AX-5 depending on 4spd/5spd.

thanks should i just get an aw4 with a 231 out of a 4x4?

Ideally. too bad you aren't local. A buddy has an AW-4 and NP-231 for $200 plus shipping.

No kidding. I have the same combo sitting in the garage right now. I'm not shipping it 3500 miles though

is it possible to bolt a t-case to my current tranny or would i have to replace the back section (cant remember what its called)?

I believe you would have to replace the "back section" and the mainshaft.
