Here is the link from to their logding page. Looks like the closest is south of Dugger about 10 miles, Green Sullivan State Forest (http://www.in.gov/dnr/forestry/index.html?http://www.in.gov/dnr/forestry/stateforests/index.html&2).
I looked at a map and Linton is around 10 miles or so too. There they have a hotel.
Sorry, I'm not too current on the lodging stuf for RedBird. It's close enough for me that we just drive it.

When we were there last time, there wasn't much mud at all Adam. There was some but not that bad, I didn't think. Here's a link to when Jim and I went last time. They had alot of rain the week before too, IIRC. We ended up running with some CJ guys that happened to be from just down the road from us. They had never been there before either, so we just put the biggest guy in front and followed him. I don' t think we ran any trail start to finish. We would run one till it ran into something else and so on. It was a good time, think I only took a strap twice. I was by far the smallest fish that day. We did run across some local yocals playing around in a zippy hole, and another that took a FS shevy into the pond.

When you mean secured battery( i know what you mean...but how?) what do you mean exactly?
I haven't been to Redbird in like 3 years and that was a different rig. I'm on 35's, NO LOCKERS and stock gearing(auto). Towpoints of course. Is that okay for Redbird these days? I don't want to hold people up with an unlockered rig. What's the terrain like these days or can you recommend some sites that have write ups? I haven't wheeled since May in Turkey Bay, I'm getting the itch again and this is closer than KY.

I just copied and pasted the NAXJA guidelines. I think the point is just to have a secured battery without using bungees. Bungees give and they want batterys anchored solid.
FWIW, I ran Redbird last time open in the front and the factory L/S in the rear on 30's. Yeah, I took a strap a couple of times, but wasn't that bad. A lot of that was probably just lack of wheeling experience on my part. Show up and wheel, you'll have a good time.
There is one hill that really pissed me off. Couldn't get up that thing for anything. I'm locked in the front now, gonna have to give it another shot.:guitar:

Cool, thanks for the info. I was there Spring or Summer of 02 when it was still being considered by the DNR for official business. It was DNR day or something and we all parked in one big grassy field. I hear it's been cleaned up real nice, etc. I remember doing something like a powerline trail that was a little off camber and then a ways down, I **think** a FS Blazer went on it's side or something. I also remember 3 distinct mudholes with a peak at each one with about 3-4 feet of dirt. So imagine mudhole, peak, mudhole, peak mudhole than normal ground. There was no go around for it and you just had to hope for the best. My ex at the time make it thru stunningly without assistance and a little luck.
What's the latest on who might be able to make this? I'm still a maybe.

98 6.5" LIFT (rustys long arms revolvers in the rear) typical lean. 35 bfg mts
no slip rear, lockright front, 4:1 tcase after this weekend, winch. many other things.
Im thinking about getting rid of the revolvers, I really think all they do is look cool.

Beezil is my copilot, and therefore Jesus is as well, by proxy.

If you guys don't mind a Land Rover taggin along I'd like to join up with you on the trails Sat. the 12th. The truck is a 89 Disco lifted appx 3" with OME HD spring, SG sliders, Kumho 31" MT's, and rear hitch mount 12K winch if needed. I've wheeled with some NAXJA members up at the Badlans but never been to Redbird.

Travis! What time should I plan to arrive at your place Friday night?
I should be headed home at about noon, getting me there some time around 5:00. So, any time after 5:00 works fine for me.
I'm going to Fastenall to get some parts to make a tool to put my bump-stops in. I'm going to build a coil spring spreader, as no one seems to sell one. I would rather not have to take apart suspension components the night before a trail run, and risk having a bolt break or something else go wrong.

Talked to the CJ guys we ran into last time we were there. They are planning on showing up, probably around 5 of them. One of them has built a buggy, and another just bought a stocker XJ. Looks like we'll probably split up into at least 2 groups.

I have coil compressors I could bring, that way all we got's ta do is flex that bitch up with the shocks disconnected. An easy evening chore. I can be there around 5.

Hey Indy, I'll take the bracket. I need one to modify for my new track bar.
I think I'm finally ready!
I wonder what I'll forget? :dunce:

You'll have to take the track bar too since it's still attached to it. All my tools are now packed in my Craftsman case tight away in the XJ. I just hope I remember to throw it in there! Pre-apology if I forget...eheh

Outstanding turn out!
Better than I ever expected.
Thanks to all who came. We will deffinatley do it again. Fun times.
Things learned by the group:
Tie Rods bend.
Fenders crinkle.
Glass breaks.
Bushwackers suck.
Euro- Trav. is no more.
Never go wheeling solo in a Land Rover. (Good lord, what a story....)
Oldsmobiles can wheel too.
Pics to follow eventually.

I learned the following:
-Redbird>Badlands.
-Little Jeeps do very well on the trail, except in deep mudholes.
-One can never have too many gauges and switches.
-Alternate routes are priceless.
Thanks for putting this together Mike, I had a great time.
Oh, BTW, did anyone accidentally leave a brand new IU Basketball T-shirt in the back of my XJ? One mysteriously turned up in a plastic bag from the University store at some point during lunch I think.

Nice meeting everyone. Made home safe, but driving was fun with all that mud in the wheels and that crosswind.

I just want to it was fun wheelin with you guys. Even if I will probably never live down having to be winched out by a Jeep (of course more than one Jeep need the assistence of an Oldsmobile??). Next time I hope to see you at Badlands. I think Redbird is a bit on the rough side for daily driver, not to mention the 4 1/2 hour drive down.
Anyhow thanks again for very interesting run.
