i hate the pre 97+ heater/ac controlls. think i could get one of these with the knobs to fit in and work right?

I would highly doubt it. You would need to look at the back. The hot/cold is controlled with a push/pull wire setup, while the heat/ac etc is controlled through a complex vacuum switch on the XJ.
