View Full Version : Who has made own Long Arm Setup?

My brother has 91 with 10's lift with aftermarket control arms now and wants to go with a longarm setup but would rather make it himself. Does not want to spend the money for a complete kit as he only needs the arms and mounts. So does anyone have any writeups as to what materials, cost and what is involved with pics. He also wants to use bushing ends instead of heims like what Skyjacker uses. TIA Jeff

heres a couple of pics of mine.

2 in 1/4 wall, 1.25 bolts and nuts, RE superflex at the crossmember, stock LCA bushings everywhere else. And a healthy dose of industrial strength glue.

That looks pretty nice Beezil. What do you guys do about the binding associated with radius arms?

Bugger welds make you drool? You are wierd......

Chuck, you are wierd :D

Vintage, yup it was pretty close, actually the shocks are the limiting straps, but the brake lines are right there, I had to unbolt them for them to work, they will get fixed before the next run. I had to pull two late nights to get everything ready for the maiden voyage, luckily and strangely enough everything worked rather well despite numerous changes and additions.

I certainly havent experienced any binding. Its flexing way better than my RE5.5 kit,I dont need any more front articulation,I need to free up the rear now!
The only binding I have is with the JJ's,since I mounted mine inboard and above the crossmember skid protection I didnt leave enough room for the joint to flex without hitting and loosening the jam nuts. Its an easy fix, just "missed it by that much".

per my post "axle brackets"

I purposely laid off the bugger welds since Beezil has his mother do the welding. I fail to see the benefit in destroying the special relationship they have together.

Opps, didn't know there was some problems with their special relationship. :)
BTW Max, You have the biggest, baddest, signature I have ever seen on NAXJA.

Thanks, but my rigs never been called "cute" before. With your draglink like that will your rig even stay on the trail let alone the street?

Not sure Matt since that's my trackbar and not the draglink. It's 1.5" .288 wall so it should hold up just fine. Working on the ram assist at the moment so the TB is temporary as is the curtain rod tie-rod you see in the pics. :D

Maybe this will help:

Have a little faith, it followed you & Richard up Wrecking Ball just fine. Wasn't it just us 3 that made the last waterfall? How quickly they forget. Did you have to declare yourself a 'big dog' or did someone bestow that title on you?

Sorry, I took the three link in your sig & figured you went trackbarless. That angle for a drag link without a trackbar could be interesting & it is one of Beezils hot buttons to push so I thought I'd get in 2 digs with one shot. Your rig's come a long way since I've seen it last. Have any good pics of the top mounts for the coil overs?

Oh... By the way. Richard hasn't made that water fall on any trip I've been on. Just wanted to be perfectly acurate. Can't give him credit for an obsticle he can't make. That fall has gotten his goat (pun intended) twice this last year.

Big Dog?... No, the wife says I'm just slightly disturbed, but any of you guys that have seen here drive will know who the disturbed one in this family is.

Matt

Hey Jump. I'm calling you out. Put up or shut up. Lets see how you think our welds should look like.

Certainly no disrespect for your projects Matt. I don't think you realy think your hot melt work would be entered in a beauty contest. Buttttt.......show welds are part of what I do in the garage. Background in buggy building kinda leads you that way. And no....I don't have any pics I can post (heck don't even have a scanner or a digital camera) As I said before I am not even on the same page as far as XJ work goes.
Hope you didn't take my ribbing tooooooo hard!

Well, that was my original plan. Inverted 3 link, but with full hydraulic steering. But I was too much of a wuss to do it so I went with a TB + 3 link......I also like to drive my Heep on the street every now & then to show those disco truck guys that scratches can be cool too.

I dont have any nice pics of the hoops at the moment, I've gotta finish stitching the fenderwells back together and make a crossbar setup to support the hoops, then I'll take some pics.

(besides, I need more sewer pipe to finish it.......that's a joke)

I feel bad for Goatman, all that acclaim but he can't make it up that little waterfall.......a shame that is. Maybe more rock stacking?

OK Jump, but until skill is proved you will always be known as a wantabe welder with little more skill than a monkey rubbing some worn through 110 electrical cord across a piece of rusty metal. So for short we'll call you Rusty Monkey. You start making claims you can't backup, you get tagged & bagged. I want to see these show welds. ;)

You know this is going to cost me MONEY! My son (14 years old) thinks the pride of our garage deserves preservation!! He thinks I should go out today and get a digital camera! This is probably not the best place to mention this but...my most recent project won best in show (off-road cat.) over.....I think I'm going to regret this.....a JEEP!

Best in Show? It must be really purdy.:) BTW, I have seen some very purdy welds fail. Seems there is more to good welds then just being purdy.
Now go get that camera so we can all see! :)

I certainly believe beauty is only skin deep when refering to welding!!! That being the reason nobody should care what others have to say about there welds!! Unless......an opinion is solicited!! (or just plain old given outta fun)
My Dad is into the digital imaging world...he might be able to help me out with that. Until next time!! C-ya
