I have a 1990 MJ, D35 rear. I need to lift the rear 2-3" without going springover (not legal here) and I am going to swap in the main leaf from a s-10 (with the eyes cut off) as a add-a-leaf.
The question I have is how important are the plastic spacers between the leaves?
Also, should I keep the spring clamps?

Sorry, there have been no new engineereing breakthroughs in MJ budget boosting in the past month...

The plastic pads are there to decrease friction... some folks omit them, some go all out, disassembling the packs, painting the leaves with graphite-impregnated paint, and installing full length teflon liners.
I would get new spring clamps that accomodate the increased thickness of the added leaves. They don't have to be pinched down super tight - leave some clearance for the rear sections to unload/droop.
