I was working on installing a front tow hook bracket this evening when the factory U-nuts on the bumper (which were rusted) stripped out. These U-nuts back four of the six bolts used to hold the bumper. The piece i'm speaking of is on page 13-1 in my 1997 XJ FSM. Anyone know where i can pick these up or a part number for them? Thanks.

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, ask at a well-stocked hardware store for "extruded" nuts.

They're the sheetmetal nuts that clip around the edge of the bracket, yes? They're available in a number of sizes - if you can't find them locally, gimme a thread size and I'll either give you a source, or see if I can get them locally and ship them to you (of course, I'll need you to pay me back. Most of my money gets tied up in schoolbooks and such...) I'll need the size of the thread that goes into them, and the thickness of the panel that they clip onto...

That's exactly what i'm looking for. I've got about a dozen auto parts stores in my area...one of them should have it. I wasn't even sure what they were called aside from the manual reference (I was thinking this was more of a specialty fitting than a generic item). I'll let you know if i have a problem coming up with them. I'll make the rounds at the local auto parts stores this weekend. Thank you for the offer.

That's funny...i went to Napa and they didn't have one large enough. I brought one of the bolts in just to be sure.

Around here I've seen those in ACE Hardware.

I'll give Ace a shot.
