Bent Dana 30??

Gunner

NAXJA Forum User
Hey guys, I did some searching but couldn't find what I needed.. Is anyone aware of a way to measure a Dana 30 to see if it's bent??? By eyeballing it, it looks fine but my locker is poping like crazy. (Lock right) It's been abused for many years and before I tear it apart I was hoping to at least have a good idea if it's bent or the locker is shot (visually the locker has some wear but I have seen worse) . Any ideas?

Thanks
Chad

missing/broken springs are normaly the culprit...

Sorry I should have been more specific. It pops very loud and harsh under load. At one point it poped 3 times (within a 1 foot distance) shaking the entire jeep while going up a small ledge. I hear ya on the springs if it wasn't under load.

Tear it down and look down the tubes, through the carrier. If it's bent enough to cause LockRight popping issues, you'llbe able to see it with your trusty eyes.

There's your problem. The Lockright is probably toast from those tires. Hell, the TSLs probably bent the housing too just to screw you over. Do up a 44, or 60s.

I can't say that it's the best set up for the tires. But I made the mistake of fancy custom steering, 4340 shats and Longfield joints so now I have a bunch of $$ stuff in a housing that isn't worth the metal its made of. Bad move. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

You put that much wear and tear on a axle and finally it gave out and you are complaining??

swap in another worthless D30 and get many years out of it

you could take the axle to a drivetrain secialist and have em spec it but in reality how much would that cost ??

opposed to just buying a new axle and swapping the parts

Tore it apart last night, the housing seems fine by running a string through the center and taking measurements. The locker looks surprisingly good, all the pins and springs are accounted for and in good shape. BUT while dinking around with the carrier the ring gear side carrier bearing came off in my hand.... This can't be good. The bearings seem to be WELL worn. Throw a rebuild kit at it and hope for the best or drop cash on a Detroit and truss the housing for good measure???? I am assuking I'll need a new carrier anyway.

if it were me.. and its not...
Rebuild and truss the hell out of it for good measure.

Now I am just losing my mind. Since this is a trail only rig. I had thought about spooling the front and adding Hydro Steering. Problem #1 Don't think they make a spool for a 30. Anyone know if they do?

Ya, probably not the best of ideas. I thought the hydro streering may have offset the initial "what the? no no no"... FYI I looked for spools anyway NEWFLASH they don't make em....... Guess it's detroit time..
