I've had better luck, taking my gas lid down and running it through the scanner (if available). Paint fades or gets darker depending on the color, over the years. I've also spent an hour or so holding the gas lid under the sample book. They often have a hole in the middle of the sample, so you can hold a body part underneath and get a good comparison (in various lighting). I've had worse luck trying to match by the factory color code and specifications, factory paint seems to come in batches and they are often somewhat different (some batches are really off).
Most any automotive paint will work, the guy at the counter can give you some tips. A flat base coat, 3 part (paint, thinner, hardener) acrylic and a 2 part (thinner, paint) clear coat is what I use. Dupont has a dozen names, it sells paint under. Ask about what kind of mask you need to paint with, questions never hurt. Some of the plastic paints will kill you.
Dupont has some decent information on there site, though some you have to dig for and/or figure a way around the password screens (for wholesalers and retailers).

In 1990 you should be looking at an acrylic enamel with a clear coat.
