I allso took off a washer and have no idea where its home is i belive it was the very last thing on the shaft befor the cover plate went on but i think that is wrong

any help would be awsome or even a link or diagram to a site that would tell me how to put it back to gether would help as well.

thanks

You are close with your diagram, but the rear bearing rides one segment up from where you have it. The bearing should be inside a snapring sandwich.

Make sure the snaprings seat fully or you will make ugly crunchy noises whenever you go over speedbumps or brake suddenly (ask me how I know - nothing a bastard file won't clean up :0 )

edit: btw, if that isn't clear, a snapring goes on - then the tail housing, then the second snapring (and the locations in your diagram are correct). Also, be careful with that oil pump pickup tube - it is fragile.

well did a little calling around and after talking to a few friendly unhelpfully people finaly found a diagram, like a missing peice of a treasure map.

instead of a bolt on extension housing it has an oil slinger that covers the seal

now if i can put everything back right and not destroy yet another seal 30 miles from my house that would be nice

thanks for everyones help.

my advice to anyone thinking about doing a do it your self transfer case rebuild write down ever step and exactly where things went get a pair of snapring, slipring pliars and go for it with ample time set aside for mistakes.

Where did you find that? It claims to be '98 XJ picture but that's most definitely a '95 or earlier tailhousing and the signal switch (#6) is the early style as well.

I've rebuilt two NP231s, an older-style in my friend's '95 YJ and a newer-style in my '98 XJ. I documented both rebuilds, so let me know if you need any pictures.

to get that rear output main shaft seal on we used some plastic coated paper bag like paper which was strong enough to be pulled on and wouldn't fallapart.

we put it around the main shaft greased it up and then slid the seal down over that so it wouldn't get caught up in the snap ring slot and tear again, Everything seemed to work this time just drove 1850 miles with out a leak, noise or any other problem

thanks for the help everyone

got another leak but it isn't that bad this time it is on the front output shaft i will post a picture if needed i was wondering if it was too full or the seal was bad hopefully it is too full becuase that would be an easy fix since i don't have tools any more
