I need to know the difference between a 1996 and a 1997 231J transfer case.
Also the difference between a 1996 and a 1997 242J transfer case.
I need this information and I would appreciate it.
Thanks.

That can be a joke or an accurate description.
A 96 and a 97, depending on the source can be either identical or incompatible.
I need to know whether I am limited to a TC from a 96XJ only, or I could bolt on
a TC from a 96-01XJ and 95-98ZJ.
I own a 96XJ.

The NP231 t-case changed for the 1996 MY, going to the later model with the longer unsupported output. As long as your driveshaft looks similar to this one you should be able to use the later case.

Of course, you could install an SYE and not worry about it ;)

Thanks Jim, I believe you are right, everything I see fits.
My problem has been that for some reason salvage books and even car-part.com
treat 96 as a special year and that made me suspect that there may be something different between 96 and 97+.
Unless I hear otherwise I will assume that they are the same cases.
