For the last several days I noticed a solvent like smell around my XJ, especially after it was hot.

Thursday I noticed tranny fluid drops on the rear window. Crawled under to find tranny fluid leaking from the bell housing. (another tranny leak:rolleyes: ) I haven't driven it since.

I am guessing the smell is cooking tranny fluid. Since the leak is out of the bell housing, would that mean a toasted torque converter?

Anyone have an idea what the problem is? What else should I check?

TIA

my guess would be that the seal on the tranny's input shaft is toast.

the smell is probably fluid sprinkling the exhaust and burning off.

after a while, you just learn to check the fluid often, top off regularly and get used to the smell :D

(you could also drop the tranny and replace the seal

CheapXJ nailed it. THis happened to me a month ago. Your front pump seal it toast and the only way to replace it is to drop the tranny. Sorry bout the bad news but thats it.
