View Full Version : Horn Doesn't Work

I have a 96 XJ. For the last few weeks, maybe longer, my horn hasn't worked. Is there a relay or a fuse for it somewhere under the dash? I saw an old post by 5-90 that said it was by the fuse panel but the only thing there was for the door buzzer and the windshield wipers. If any of you have a drawing that would be ood. TIA.

Not sure about the '96.
But the fuse on earlier models, it was clearly marked ............ as HDLP DLY.

Not sure about yours....but on an 89'there is a"horn relay"(really)above the left kick panel....Kinda had the same problem, found out the relay had "jiggled"lose ever now n then I had to make sure it was tight if the horn didn't work...Take a look see

Ooh! Ooh! Let me know if you find anything! :D
My horn in my 96 doesn't work either. The FSM is totally cryptic on relay location. There is a small panel of relays under the dash in front of the driver that I take to be the correct location.
I went to the auto parts store and asked for a horn relay for a '96 cherokee and they found a part that looks remarkably like a standard bosch.
Coincidentally, there is only one relay on that panel that is that type. I replaced it but did not fix anything.
It's a PITA to get to and I replaced it by feel, so I didn't bother trying to test the socket as I wouldn't know what I was sticking my probes into anyway.
Still no idea if that's even the right relay - just been driving without a horn for a year.

Does your window roll still down? If so, what's the problem :D
Take a voltmeter and check for current to the horn while someone's leaning into it and see if there is any voltage coming down. It might be that your horns just gave out.

Tried it with a 12v light and nothing. I ran a jumper to the horns to provide power direct from the battery and the horns work. It's just that they don't work when pressing the button on the steering wheel, plus i don't really want to wire in a momentary switch.

I can't speak for later years but on my '85 the contact ring under the horn button gets "corroded" every several years and has to be cleaned -- an easy job with a bit of sandpaper.

Most likely cause is the clockspring in the steering column. Especially the respondant who already replaced the relay.

I saw two small relays (like the ones in the engine compartment) under the dash by the right knee. They were right next to the relay for the blinkers. If one of those is for the horn, what is the other one for? I didn't see any label on them. Thanks.

Thanks! Will check it out.

Like I said, the FSM is cryptic :D There's only one mention of the panel being under the driver's dash with no specific location given, and there are no markings or diagrams in the FSM or on the actual panel. The one in my jeep had only one bosch style relay, and a couple smaller odd sized relays of different colors. If you have two of them, the only thing I can suggest is swapping them out one at a time. Although, IIRC, it is blue, so if you have one blue and one another color, try the blue one first.

Still no working horn. Anyone have a wiring diagram showing the schematic for the horn and the fuse and relay? When I push the horn button I don't get anything. No clicking or nada. I switched around the relays in the area by the driver's side knee and still nothing. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

On my '93 the relay was under the dash to the right of the steering wheel (facing away from the driver) Check the numbers on your relays (one is probably for the rear window defogger) and if that's the same, swap them. I'm pretty sure the switchover from the early 3 prong relay to later electronic relay was in '91.
On the other hand, the wiring in your steering column may have chafed through where the tilt joint is. (can't recall the wire color, but I recently troubleshot my '93 by finding that wire and checking it at the plug on the side of the column)
