Anyone have experience with these types of devices?

USB Repeater over Cat 5 Cable (http://www.usbfirewire.com/Parts/rr-47-1931.html)

Just wondering how well they work. How disk media works over it (crap speed?), that kind of thing.

I was thinking of moving my backup HDDs to another building over the network. Sort of "soft" off-site.

Never used it.

But, just looks just short of a USB to 100baseT bridge, (or USB wireless NIC)

Cat5 can certainly handle the data rates, and it's only 50M.

To me it looks like a waste of money, I'm not a big usb fan except for those usb memory fobs. I'd just add a NAS subsystem, password it and be done. About the only reason I'd try the usb thing is so that I had first hand knowlege about it for reference. Buffalo makes a 300gb nas for around $350 or so and seagate just came out with 500gb sata drive so the nas's should also go up storage wise. Buffalo also makes a 1TB NAS for under $1000.00. Other alternative is take an old machine, install linux on it, add 2 big hard drives and kick off samba then map the drive to your PC.
