XJ clunking noise

I have a clunking noise coming from the front only when in "reverse", don't hear it going forward. Anybody have ideas what it might be???

I can hazard a guess and say you have worn front driveshaft U-joints but you'll have to be more specific about what provokes the clunking.

check your tranny mount

start simple and eliminate what it can't be knowing what you now know.

DS would clunk at least 3 times for every rotation of the tire.

so its in the axle somewhere. brake calipers tight? what do the u-joints look like? any play in the bearing assemblies?

Try cranking your steering wheel all the way in either direction and then driving slowly forward. If you hear the clunking then, it is most likely U-joints.

I just had the exact same problem. With the wheel straight, you shouldn't get the noise, unless they are really bad.

I take that back, if it is 4X4, you should get one clunk as you take off with the wheel straight.

Is the noise coming from the wheel or is it more central to the vehicle?
