Found in the local sale paper, it has blown motor. The owner is asking $500.00
If it isn't gone already, what sort of axles / driveline pearls would I expect to find within this oyster?
I am thinking leaf-sprung HP D44/disc front, LP9" or D60 drum rear; 8 on 6.5 lug hubs.
Either a SM465 granny 4sp or C4/C6? if 3sp auto.
NP 205 or 203 t-case.
If "you" had a $500 windfall and monster-truck MJ fantasies...is this something to bring home? Or better off holding out for something with dual 60s.

I looked for a set of 60's I could afford for 3 years. Finally found a 60/sterling for $500. I guess it all depends on how long you want to wait. Sounds like a good score though.

This truck is what i got my axles off of. They should be a HPD44 8 lug i think it is on a 6" patteren it should be a a D60. I'm not sure if fords used sm trannys or not and i'm also not sure what tcase they used. But the axles alone are probablt worth the 500$. As for holding out for dual 60's. Don't hold your breath. I have a freind that just bought a front 60 for his project. it cost him almost 1500$ by the time he got it converted to single wheel and mounted.

I believe when Woody says "Dual 60s" he means 60s front and rear, not a rear dualie axle.

If the F250 has the snow plow package it will have an HP d60 front. If it doesn't then its a HP d44 eight lug.
motor is probably either a 460 or 400 or 351m...it could have a 300 inline 6, tranny if automatic is a c6 if manual probably a t-18.
i'd at least take a look and see if its got d60s...if its got a 60 upfront that's a steal for anything around 500 bucks.

I have a 79 F250
Most came with a leaf sprung HP 44 In front or a few had the HP 60
4.10 gears are the norm but a very few had 3.54
the engine is a 400, 351M or a 300 six. NO 460s Stock only in the 73-76.
Tran is either a NP435 Or a C6 It is mated to a np205 parttime or np203 fulltime (auto only)

Everyone is failing to mention that the 8 lug HP D44 is a 3/4 ton model and has larger axle tubes than the 1/2 ton that most are running. The axleshafts are the same size. It will have twin piston calipers and 13" dia rotors, which is a good thing. It's a good strong front axle, the only thing close to a downside is that the long side shaft is about 1" longer than most common D44 1/2 ton axle shafts, so you'll have to go custom. Ask me how I know. :D
If you want a bulletproof rear that wont ever leave you stranded, get a 14 bolt and shave it. I've got almost the same clearance as a D44, more than an unshaved D60, setup is a breeze on these axles, the Detroit is cheap and super strong. I converted to rear discs for $50 in junkyard rotors & calipers. I love my rear end. :skull1:

Thanks for the advice...I just called and it was a 2WD :bawl: setup for but missing a 300-I6 and has a granny 4spd.
I really didn't need a MJ monster truck, not just yet anyways ;)
I have enough $tuff yet to do on the XJs to toss my bonus check at...and then some.
Good advice on the GM14b Vintage...that'd be my first choice for rear (cheap & easy, kinda big tho but with shaving and 40+" tires) but if I was able to fall into a HP44 or 60, plus a matching 60 rear for $500, well it'd been hard to pass up.
