When changing gears, is there a break in period as far as fluids are concerned? If so, can I just put back the Redline synth thats only 20k miles old and use if for the break in?

Yes there is a break-in period...the most important is the first few miles...and 500 miles is the generally recommended period. Randy's Ring and Pinion website has a good page about break-in.

I would use new conventional oil during break-in...

id use the old fluid...

in 500 miles you are taking a ton of material off as the gears mesh together and wear with eachother...

so run the old fluid and toss it at 500 miles...

also might want to run the fluid thru a coffe filter first to get all the old metal out of it... maybe?
