when in four i have a screaching grinding noise that sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the front axle. it used to happen only turning but now it is allways there is four, when i put it back in two then it stopes after a few seconds of driving. i am under the infuence that this is the u-joint in the axle, am i correct?

could be.take it out and check it.while you are going at it check the unit bearing

and the ball joints

allright im tearing into it tomorow, what size ujoint is in the front? and do you know how much a new, stock quality one would cost at a standard auto parts store?

Which u-joint? What year/equipment?

Axleshaft:
Spicer 5-260x for most older XJs through '95
Spicer 5-297x (upgradeable to 5-760x) after that

Driveshaft:
1310 series, again Spicer, I believe it's a 5-153x
