BP/Amoco gas bad all over??

Weeks ago I posted that after about 100 miles or so into a tank of BP gas my 89 4.0 started stumbling, stalling, etc, but was great under acceleration or in N. Everything pointed to bad gas. After refilling a few times, THEN using the fuel pump and a bucket to clear the tank, it finally worked OK with QT, Citgo, etc. All seemed fine.

Having not had recent rain, and being on E right next to another BP in another town this week, I put in a half tank. Well, about 100 miles into it, SAME THING! Now it's doing it all over again!

Anyone have this same problem? The 2 stations are weeks and towns apart. I've never had problems before, but maybe they're trying some new formulation? Any other ideas?

My dad has a BP card so I run that through every tank in my Heep. Mine is a 1990 but I've never noticed anything different-been running BP/Amoco gas for probably 5 or so years. Then again my heep has always stumbled.

I've noticed a difference in the fuel on this tank of BP I put in on monday, my xj seems a little dead on it's feet. This BP has been the cheapest in the area for all brands. I'm also wondering if the 235/75/r15's are some of the reason too.

stay with Citgo its not arab oil
The citgo chain near me quit taking BOTH, Discover AND american express,
Diesel only, you can still use those for gas just not diesel.
I had been going to the Road Ranger truck stop across from my shop exclusivly for a year, since they opened it, then one day the gal at the register said she could no longer accept my AmEx, I handed her a Discover and she said I couldn't use that one either. I thanked her for the free fuel.

Not to Hijack, I used BP/Amoco in my hot rod bike exclusivly for years and it was the only gas it would run good on, (excpept for AvGas :gag: )

I've always used it (BP) too, just the last 2 tanks are rotten, and from different times and places. I'll defintiely not go back (although the cash card rebates on their card with their gas I was getting were nice...).

I can't see how one brand of gas (especially a major one) can not work. I mean, this performance is bad, when it won't even idle!

The only other time I saw this was in a Bronco II and a one-time tank of Hess gas. It was so long ago I forgot the exact details, but I never went back, never had another problem.

*** Can there be any permanent damage from bad gas like this?

How about running out of gas on the road (not highway, just driving it to real low levels and not making to the station before running out)??

A few weeks ago, I drove out to the BP station at Steel's Corners to fill up. I was running on fumes when I got there. I used my card to pay at the pump, then decided I wanted to see if I could buy a six pack of water (which they offer for 99 cents with a fill-up. A clerk inside the station told me they were closed, a fact I didn't realize when I filled up. I was surprised the machine had let me pump over $20 in gas and pay at the pump if they were closed.

Right after that, I noticed the "check engine" light on and it ran poorly. I stopped at an Auto Zone and they did their little test, but it only showed that the problem was "emissions related" and could have been anything. I didn't worry about it because a) the car had just passed e-check and b)I've learned in the past year of owning her that the lights can be a bit hyper-sensitive.

The light stayed on . . .until my next fill-up at Citco! Shortly after that, I noticed the light was off. It hasn't been back on since, and I haven't been back to that station since!

So . . . maybe I got bad gas. Or maybe the hyper-sensitive light was just over-reacting to less than perfect gas.

How can you say Citgo is not Arab oil? That's crazy. Over 60% of the oil consumed by this country is imported, most from the middle east (arabs), some from Venezula, Russia, Canada, North Sea, etc. By the time it's refined into gasoline and pumped to the local distribution centers and then trucked to your local station I can guarantee you that there is arab oil in there along with all of the other sources.

i dont like shell gas. i get terrible mileage out of it for some reason. BP has never given me a problem, but i prefer diamond shamrock or Fina or whatever theyre calling it these days.

Because Citco is owned by Venezula and USA get's 30% of it's oil from there.

Bee Pee sucks every since the Britt's bought it.

BP stands for British Petroleum

I've never had a problem with their gas. BP and Chervon are the only two gas brands I use and I never had any problems.

probably has no more british ownership now than anything else..

Anyway, skip I'm not sure if I follow all this, but if you ran it out of gas you
could have damaged the fuel pump.

Havent used BP/Amoco gas, way too expensive around here. The one time my buddy and I tried to use a BP station (in his escort, we costed in sputtering and stalling from lack of fuel) you had to pre pay. How the heck are you gonna pre pay when you wanna fill it up. We ended up putting in about $5 worth to hold us till the next station and if I remember correctly it still ran like crap (crappier than a 4 cyl. 93 escort should).

I've always been a fan of Texaco, Costco, or Wilco/Hess gas. Been getting the best milage so far from Costco, and they're usually the cheapest in town.

It's been several hundred miles since then, and until this last BP load. Ran OK, although it SEEMS to take an extra half second to start cold (no change once warm). It could be that I'm just not remembering right after all the trouble I went through...

How will I know if the pump is damaged, other than failure? If it's working is it fine?

BTW, the pump usually is very loud - has been since I bought it 25k miles and 1-1/2 yrs ago. However, I've been adding Marvel oil to the gas since this fiasco and it seems to make the pump very quiet.

Funny, I've had 1 problem with gas in the past 12 years in my 91 and that was from a 66 station in BFE Pennsylvania. It had so much water in it the fuel pump froze. (it was COLDDDDDD outside) Otherwise mine runs the same on whatever I put in the tank, that's why I like it so much. I currently use Costco gas in all my vehicles and they run fine. Plus it's a few cents cheaper! Who knows where that stuff comes from though.

get a fuel pressure gage and next time you are haveing troubles chech the pressure.
Usually a weak pump will have the opposite effect, hard start but good idle and stumble/stall under acceleration..but its a simple enough then to check and rule out.
