I usually ride a bike year round for about 99% of my non-work transpo. I've also got bad knees thanks to my fun as a Marine and not taking care of myself since wayyyy back. Well, it's getting to the pointcult to hold the bike upright with the wife or a load on the bike so I've been researching trikes. Been looking into VW ones due to price. Then I realized I had a XJ sitting in the parking lot needing at least a top end rebuild (thanks to my daughter) and it sure aint selling the way it is so....that would mean I've got a motor and trans already.
How long is the 4.0 motor? How long is the motor and AW4 trans? Weight? Thoughts?

long (it is an I6) and heavy (almost as much as a SBC). if those are major concerns I would forget it.

The weights not a major concern considering they build trikes with both SBC and BBC's. Any idea of the actual length?

Thanks for the link to Lightening but aint much of chance I can afford one of those. Of course one can still lust after them!
I sorta check out chopperweb just not on a steady basis. Wish I could build my own but no garage and no welder. The welder I could fix, the garage not so easily!

I just pulled some quick tape. The 4.0 + (4wd) AW4 is apprx 59"... maybe a tad less. The tailcone on my 2wd AW4 is apprx 10" long from the rear face of the tranny case to the slip-yoke type output shaft.
Just for grins, a D44 is apprx 12" from the face on pinion yoke to axle/ring gear c/l.
The AW4 isn't terrible heavy, maybe 75-100# but the 4.0 with all its periphials? probably a bit north of 600#.

Thanks! So close to 5 ft. Mines a 2wd also. Turns out there's a dude building one with the same setup already. His is from a postal XJ. Probably will sell the XJ instead of triking it as that would make for a lonnnnggg trike. 10 foot or so. Was thinking bout the power and the low cost and sorta started to drool for a little bit. :laugh3:

With a 2x4 AW4, it's closer to 6 ft, with a yoke.
I have been dreaming on another bike to get better MPGs over my 250mi/wk commute.
The Buell Blast looks like a blast to ride. It appears to be 1/2 of a Sportster V-twin, in a light, crisp chassis. Weighs apprx 350# IIRC...They claim it gets 74 MPG.
Also pondering a trail bike (XR250/400? KDX220?) Hang basic 12v electrics on it, swap tires, and gear it up so it isn't screaming at 40-60.
