Hello Gang,
Take time to do it right. Pick a day to do this where you are not rushed. If you can weld, you can save yourself allot of money. I recommend using a mig welder, for it runs hotter for better penetration, and it is allot cleaner. But I wouldn't be afraid to weld it with a stick machine, or flux core wire. I welded some heavy tacks while the assembly was still in the diff. Then I pulled the assembly out and worked on the bench. I welded a section at a time, making sure to get good penetration but not getting it to hot. You can stuff rags in the spline holes and anywhere esle you want to protect from splatter. Or you can do what I do and use a spray that you can get at any weld supply store. I have this stuff laying around anyway because of other jobs. I spray everything well and then I don't have to worry about splatter. Actually, you can use "PAM". Yes, the one the little lady uses in the kitchen for no stick reasons. You will have to spray more often, but it does work. To go even cheaper, you can use your torch and use the acetylene only and blacken everything except where you will be welding. I learned this trick during my apprenticeship. But do cover the bearing very well with something. And attach the ground lead very close to your work. Never allow a bearing to be between your ground lead and your work. I am also attaching my rear shock relocation modification pictures. If you are interested in this project, please send me a PM, and I can talk to you further on that. I am sorry for the long post, but I wanted to explain everything. I hope this helps some of you...................

Cool deal! Do ya think you used enough welding wire to weld the diff up? Should be plenty strong!

When we did mine we welded the gears to the carrier just to make sure they didn't want to spin.
