Axle vents

XJ4x4

NAXJA Forum User
Ok I know where the vent is on the rear axle but where is the vent on the front? Would it be ok to plug them and leave them because hunting season is getting close and I know I'll be getting into some water so I can get deeper into the mountains.

Just extend the breather tube to the top of the firewall and top it with a cheap small air cleaner.

If you get deep enough to drown them there, you will have bigger problems.

On the front, the tube usually follows the inside of the upper control arm which makes it hard to see.

I would not be wise to plug the vents. For one thing, if the axles are warm and you hit water or mud, the vaccum created by the rapid cool down can suck debris past the seal and into the housing.

Hot air in the housing has to expand, if there is no room to expand, that can cause fluid to be forced either thru the case or out the seals.
