Plan is to leave on Friday afternoon. Preferrably at 4:00pm or so since I've got work until 3:00. I'm in Manassas, so I'll likely meet you guys up there since you'll be heading my way to get to I-66W. Lets figure out where we're staying so we can start arranging accomodations, since it would appear that we will have the women folk with us.

Is this supposed to be on the same thread as the other GWNF?
Planning on Nov. 2-3?

That was my fault. Hit the wrong button. Yes this is the same thread, the run will be November second and third.
I will be home on Friday, therefore I will be ready to go and the early afternoon. If anyone in the area would like to travel with us you are welcomed, let us know and we will meet up. Tim can you find out what hotel we stayed at the last time? Is there any one that knows the trails, that are going with us? AlsoI think we can use this thread to find out what the head count is. Hope to see you on the trail. :D Hey Ben are you going with us?

I've been down there a few times, i know some what on the left side of Rt 33, but i don't know the Dictums ridge run
the USGA map has all the trails around there marked, and if anyone has a GPS we would be set.
David
P.S. I'll be meeting yall up there as early as you want on saturday
Bob Lester
October 12th, 2002, 17:31
Cool. I have a GPS. Between the four of us, we should be able to figure it out.
Bob
P. S. were do we get the map from?

I still plan on coming, are we wheelin on friday or are you guys just gettin there early? I'm gonna need directions if you all plan on goin down Friday night...
October 13th, 2002, 10:15
im not gonna make it up there. however all the trails are marked decently enough on the map. dictums ridge starts as right turn into someones driveway just after a bridge, immediately take a left up the steep dirt/gravel road. make sure you are in 4lo as this is an access that the people who own the house let us use. dont tear it up...dictum is currently the only way to get onto second mountain so i have heard. kephart run is marked by a sign that says kephart.

Sorry you cant make it Hunter. You were a great guide last time. The fed site for Gwnf gives directions to turn left onto FDR72 at Gospel hill church for dictums ridge and second mountain, but there is no map on their site. Where can we get a map or are the trails marked from there including difficulty? I didnt see directions to Kephart's Run,that was right off the main road somewhere wasnt it? Was that just one trail there or did it connect to others? Many camped there if i recall correctly. Can you help us with directions and/or a link to a trail map?
October 14th, 2002, 04:18
I'm still interested. I just need to know where and when we'll be meeting up.
What are the difficulty level of these trails that are being discussed?
October 14th, 2002, 10:37
Well guys, unless I can 'wheel Friday afternoon a little bit, it looks like I won't be able to make it. My dad let on that my mom would be really upset if I didn't come home for my b-day, so I'm headed North to Rockville. I could wheel Friday afternoon 'cause it's on my way home, but gotta be home by late friday night. Let me know what's goin down. Peace
Ary
October 16th, 2002, 00:11
Perhaps I should rephrase that.....is anyone planning to wheel friday afternoon/evening?? Thanks
Ary

October 17th, 2002, 07:25
Well, my truck is almost ready to make this trip and wheel so I'll be bringing it regardless. I say we aim to meet up at McDormans Grocery (click for a yahoo map) (http://yp.yahoo.com/py/ypMap.py?Pyt=Typ&tuid=2463830&ck=704842313&tab=B2C &tcat=7766835&city=Harrisonburg&state=VA&country=u s&msa=0000&slt=38.449108&sln=-78.869064&cs=4&stat=:pos:0:regular:regT:1:fbT:0) at 8:30am on Saturday morning and try and headout by 9:00. Gary, Bob and I will be getting in at night on Friday so we won't be wheeling that night, and we won't be camping since setting up camp in the dark and cold isn't our idea of fun. We're still debating camping the second night, but that's yet to be seen. Wheelin on Sunday would be at the same time and place for the meet up. I'll work to get maps and have some info ready soon on trails we'll run etc etc. I'm hopin to have a 4 truck caravan comin from NoVa.

Im still planning on coming down, but I might have to come down Saturday morning. It all depends on if the football games up here are still cancelled... Skorpyo, how long do you think the drive will be? Mapquest says 2.5 hours, but thats without traffic...
Skorpyo
October 20th, 2002, 16:39
From the DC metro area, it's about 2 hours to Harrisonburg going out 66 to 81. I'm guessing 2.5 would be about right to get you to mdormans. Hope to see you all there, I should have maps in the mail soon.

Ok folks, just a week away, and Bob, Gary and I have secured a hotel. We'll be staying at the Ramada off Route 11. We've got ladies coming along with us, so camping wasn't an option (where's that electrical outlet again?). Here's a link For The Ramada (http://yp.yahoo.com/py/ypMap.py?Pyt=Typ&tuid=2460476&ck=81094814&tab=B2C& tcat=7737307&city=Harrisonburg&state=VA&country=us &msa=0000&slt=38.449108&sln=-78.869064&cs=4&stat=:pos:0:regular:regT:1:fbT:0) on a map with contact information if anyone else is interested in staying there. It's $45 a night and be sure to post here where you'll be staying. I got maps now thanks to Hunter so I'm gonna work on mapping out a plan of attack for these trails. Thanks to everyone for their patience in putting this trip together.
ps. Sunday the extended brakelines go in, so my truck'll be ready to go at 6"!
October 25th, 2002, 15:40
So yall aren't camping out saturday night?? That actually makes it easier for me, there are fraternity commitments i have to get to.
So what time do you think will get off the trails?? Dark?
David

October 26th, 2002, 08:50
Likely we'll wheel till about 3-4pm with a break for lunch. Sunday we'll probably only wheel till 1 or 2 so that we can get a jump on getting everyone home at a reasonable time.

well,i'm glad i'm sleeping inside, might have to pack a thermos of coffee.
October 30th, 2002, 19:11
I second the thermos, its going to be cold, with all this rain , i hope that river is not to high.
We went last year after a solid 4 days of rain, and the water was incredible that is the only really tricky part is that river!
We'll see

Slight change in plans if anyone was planning on meeting up with us in Woodbridge. We're gonna be leaving from Manassas instead. Drop me an email ASAP if you want to join us in the caravan. We'll be leaving around 7pm or so. Send me your cell or phone numbers so I can call you and give you directions to where we are meeting up. Thanks all!
