i have a '91 xj with a dana 30, detroit locker and 4.56 gears...thinking about switching the oem vacume system with '4x4posi-lok' cable system. have any you tried this system? what do think? has it been a benifit?, and also reliable?

My buddy has one on his '84. Works great, easy to use. However, he did manage to snap the shift fork inside the axle on Moab Rim. We never figured out exactly how it happened, since there shouldn't be any terrible stress on the piece.
He got it rewelded in town that night and put it all back together.
Works great again. He recommends it to all the disco folks. It allows you to effectively run in 2-low, which is nice for turning in the rocks.

After many problems with my vacuum system from a bad vacuum switch to rust inside the steel vacuum lines...i got the Posi-lok.
IMHO it is a very well designed system..make sure it is installed properly and it is fully engaged...route the cable carefully...the larger the radius of the bend, the smoother it will work. beware that if it gets against the exhaust pipe it will fry..took me about an hour to install.

I have found that the best way to engage it is while you are still in 2 wheel...and moving VERY slowly..the handle MUST pull all the way into the engaged position. Engaging the t/case first seems to not allow it to fully engage sometimes...I imagine that is how at least some of the shift forks get broken. I also carry a spare fork kit just in case although I have never broken one.

I've had one for a while. It's nice to be able to wheel in 2 low since you can take it out of 4 with the cable disco. It's strong and trouble free as long as you remember to engage it. Of course if you not old like I am and you don't have a bad case of CRS then you shouldn't have a problem. My first expierience of forgetting to engage it was on Cliffhanger trail and I kept trying to figure out why I was having so much trouble until I got to the top of the Z turn and the guy spotting me said. It didn't look like the front end was turning. Would have been nice if he had told me sooner.
Just remember to reach down and engage.
Buy it, You won't be sorry.

I also suffer from CRS, but am trying to live a normal life...

I've been wanting to buy or build a manual cable for quite some time. Couple of questions:

Where's the best price on one of these babies???

What's the deal with steel/aluminum forks? I didn't know there were two. Are both factory parts? Did certain years come with one vs the other or is the steel one an aftermarket piece?

TIA

now where did I put my beer...

It appears that the prices are controlled...200 bucks basically...I got mine from Quadratec...JC Whitney started carrying them too...same price...

I've been running mine for about 2 months now and I like it a lot. The plus side is getting 2-low, easy install and operation. I run mine with a spool in the front so its like a cheap ox locker!

I bought an axle that has this on it but the cable is cut and the pin that slides in and out on the right side is bent. Is there any way to fix this reasonably or would I have to trash the whole thing.

Part# for the steel fork and pads are on the instructions which you can acess from here - http://www.4x4posi-lok.com/jeep_page.html

You could try a cheap home-brew alternative, here are several write-ups on the web.

The following two are of the same diagram, and the first is of the author of the diagram. Unfortunately, his website isn't the most reliable, so I put a copy on my website as a backup - that is the same diagram.

A cable disconnect:

Another design that uses the existing vacuum switch, but different controls is:

Another cable design that I like best is this:

I haven't tried any yet, but will when I put in a locker.
