I am looking into a 96 for under 100,000 miles and its 4200 bucks. This would be my first Jeep, and was wondering if this was a good year. And no matter good year or not, what problems do 96 XJ owners notice with their vehicles.

Good year. Any likely problems are something that dozens of NAXJA posters have already run into, so they're a non-issue.

Cracked exhaust manifold. Look very carefully at it, and be prepared to replace it. http://www.yuccaman.com/jeep/exhaust.html

The t-case tailhousing is unsupported, so expect it to cause vibrations when lifted more than an inch or so. An SYE will resolve this.

D35 rear axle. It's crap. It comes with the ABS-equipped XJ, identify it at http://www.yuccaman.com/jeep/gear1.html#axle

210* is normal operating temperature. Expect to replace the radiator if it's stock. www.radiators.com used to have CSF radiators but their website is craptastic....call them to talk to a human. GDI used to make good radiators but I've heard too many bad tales recently so wouldn't recommend them at this time.

What else...? Not much that I can think of...
