I have an '01 XJ w/ the 4.0 Does anyone know what type of auto tranny this has, and where are the I.D. tags or serial # tags on it? Thanks.

The only auto behind the 4.0 in the XJ was the Aisin-Warner AW4 four-speed - not a bad box. If it's on synthetic, keep it there. If it's not, don't switch. Either way, it tends to be picky.

There should be an ID tag on the back of the tcase telling you which one you have - it should be either then NP231 (part-time 4WD only) or NP242 (part-time/full-time 4WD.) Both are decent cases. The ID tag is round, and secured with a single screw.

All front axles were D30, and your rear axle is likely a ChryCo 8.25" - you can tell by the shape. The D35 is nearly oval with a smooth outline, the ChryCo is more octagonal. ID tags for both axles, if present, will be retained by cover bolts.

If you want the cylinder head casting number, you should find it on the driver's side above the intake manifold - should be 0331, IIRC.

The engine numbers are usually on a machined pad on the passenger side of the block. These numbers will usually tell you what version of engine (no longer important - unless it's been swapped,) and any factory oversize/undersize that was done.

If you check the axle tubes carefully, near the center section, on the cover side, you might find the BoM (Bill of Material) numbers, which you can then run (for Dana axles - don't know about ChryCo) at Dana's website to see what parts they used, if you're curious.

There are usually ID tags on the firewall and probably on the crossmember over the radiator - they should duplicate the VIN, and have paint and body information.

Also, check behind the driver's door liner. It seems that factory build sheets end up in there quite a bit, and there's a LOT of information to be had from those!

Good luck!
