Any of you midwesterners or CO folk interested in this? We could run it all day and then head over to Moab around 5-6 pm. It's only a few minutes off I70 and it's a fun slightly technical trail.

Since I've pretty much got the folks hooked on the wheelin' scene, I'm trying to give them as diverse an experience as possible. So far they've been to Moab, Carnage Canyon (Boulder), Paragon, and in 2 weeks I'll have 'em in Tellico. Sounds like it's time for a family trip to CA:D

I’m not from the Midwest or CO, so maybe I’m not invited, but I might be willing to come up and run it with you. I think it’s about an hour and a half from Moab, correct?

4ward

Well, I suppose I could open the invite to everyone

It typically takes me about 2 hours to get there from Junction, but I'm always towing.

I live in Grand Junction where 21 rd is and have done it a few times. I'd be willing to hit along with quite a few other jeepers out here if you guys want to run it on either Sun the 5th or the sun after NAXJA, but i do the 8-5 mon-fri thing so i won't be able to join ya if you do it on a mon, tues or wed.

Well, if I wasn't such a barkeater, I would've put the correct date down. I meant for it to be Sun. the 5th  I'll contact the moderator and see if I can get the title changed. The only day I plan on missing for this event is going to be the last day.

Oh man would I!!! I've wanted to run that trail for a long time. I dunno if we can get going early enough though. I have been trying to organize a convoy of Colorado folks to drive together to Moab on Sunday the 5th. I think Crunch, BLoose, Dave Peters and possibly Eshel will be included in this convoy. I was thinking we wouldn't realistically get out of town until 10 am though. I doubt we could make it up to 21 RD with enough time to join you.

My other concern is that I will be leading Steel Bender on Tuesday and I don't wanna risk breakage before then.

Jeez, what to do - what to do..........

4ward
July 26th, 2003, 20:21
Well, Crunch was talking about running it with me at Tellico. Why can't you guys get your act together and head over Sat. night and camp out? You live 4.5 hrs. away and you've never done this trail  How many more excuses can you come up with? Are you not going to run on Mon. either so as not to risk damage? How long do you think it would take us to fix your broken in half heep anyhow :D

I guess I'm gonna have to start hangin' with the west coast contingent, at least they run their own trails :firedevil

Sean, it must be something about Sunday. CO XJ'ers just don't run 21 Rd on Sunday. ;) :D

YELLAHEEP
July 27th, 2003, 05:04
Well Sean, I have no good response to your accusations. Guilty as charged! It really should be a crime for a Coloradan to have more 'wheeling time in Moab than in Colorado. I'll work on the wife and see if she'd be game to leave earlier. Gotta see if the neighbors will watch the animals for an extra day too. Maybe BLoose can leave a bit earlier too and join us. I have a feeling that if Dave Peters is in town he'd like to run 21 Rd as well. I'll do what I can to get there!

BTW, I have no doubt the group could get my junk fixed if it did break -- dunno why I'm so worried. Got a trailer and tow rig...... I think I'm just concerned about running 2 solid lockers and 35's. I have visions of my D30 blowing up and I'd be out of commission for the rest of the event. I recently welded the tubes to the housing, trussed it up and reinforced the right UCA mount. I'll have 297's installed too. Whaddya think?

Guess I just need to get out and 'wheel more often to put my concerns to rest!

Goatman
July 27th, 2003, 14:13
Troy, plenty of people are running 35's on D30's, just be careful to not get the front tires in a bind, and if you're up against something be real easy on the gas. If you haven't put the 297x shafts in yet, go ahead an replace the c-clips with snap rings, then you should be in real good shape. You'll still have the smaller u-joint shafts for spares, right?

If you're afraid of breaking something, put the 33's back on. :D :D

Crunch
July 27th, 2003, 21:58
Hey Troy,

I'm taking those 297 shafts out tomorrow (Monday), and will give a call when to hook up.

I'm gonna call Slickrock and see if I can get my camp sight a couple of days earlier for this 21 road run. If so, I have to try to get my parents to change their minds about coming to see me on those dates.

Gotta wheel like a left coaster.... often and everywhere.

Do those guys have jobs? :D

Richard,

Yeah, I hear ya. I've seen lots of guys running the same setup I have and without much problem. I believe that 21 Rd will be the hardest trail I will have ever run and so I don't have much experience with my new setup to base a decision with. I have a very good set of 260 spares ready with the caps spot welded. I was planning on spot welding the caps on the 297's when I get them but, if someone will let me know where to find the snap rings, I'll definitely install those as well. I'm assuming one wouldn't want to spot weld AND snap ring? If I had a set of 33's I prolly would take them along - never had 33's - but it's 35's or nuthin'.

Shari is on board for leaving early too, so I guess I'll have to man-up and get my junk out there to run it with Sean's group!

4ward
July 28th, 2003, 17:14
Well, the snap rings are supposedly a metric one. Richard knows the part # for them. I run 1" snap rings on mine and thought they fit fine.

Well, I'm glad to hear you are gonna pony up and get and run. We should be able to get a decent group together. The cool thing about that trail is you can make it as hard or easy as you want to. At least, that's the way it was when I ran it. We even had a welding truck come tooling down the road next to the wash and fix a couple of us, talk about slick.

Crunch
July 28th, 2003, 17:44
Sean said, "the cool thing about that trail is you can make it as hard or easy as you want" :D :D :D :D

Yeah right :D :D While Sean is around, it's real hard to take the easy line because he wants your junk on the same line his junk takes :D :D :D . Good thing is he is right there for the spot with the welding helmet in one hand and a big rock in the other.

Some of us need a little coaxing from time to time ;) . I don't need much, but when I do, Sean is right there with it.

Some of us are just more fun than others...RIGHT?? :D

Is it too early to start a "Things to be finished before Moab" thread? It might help people remember how little time there is to get things like front suspension redesigns and 1/4 eliptic rears and D60 installs completed.

Chomping at the bit,
Crunch

Too little of time, what are you talking about? I've got 3 ring gears at the grinder's right now, shoulda had 'em back. I need to call the guy tomorrow.

4ward
July 29th, 2003, 08:17
What if we don't want to break, can we drive the give away instead :D

The more the merrier, we can get through this trail semi quickly if everyone stays in one piece. If we are having massive breakage, we can get off the trail pretty easily and quickly also. That's why I suggested this one as a "warm up" for Moab. We aren't stuck in the backcountry of CO with no way of getting folks back to the trailer and on to the campground.

Goatman
July 29th, 2003, 19:48
Troy, you can either weld the caps or install snap rings, but you don't need both.

There is a nice campground in Fruita, I think it's the next off ramp past the turn off to 21 Rd. We stayed there for BOTW2. They also have sopme cabins. It would be a good place to stay on Sat night if you're going to run 21 Rd on Sunday. It should be no problem getting to Moab Sunday evening, unless someone breaks something late in the day and you go out the top and get lost rather than driving back down the canyon.

Where can I pull up a map of how to get to 21 Rd.? I'd like to see where it is in relation to Grand Junction. This year, Shari and I are gonna do the hotel thing in Moab 'cuz this is likely the only vacation we'll have this year and we decided not to rough - it. So, we'd be best to find a hotel near 21 Rd so we don't have to haul camping stuff for one night.

If anyone knows the size of snap rings I'd need, please pass it along, those are probably easier to remove than a spot weld when on the trail.

Well, you get off at Rd. 23 and head west on the frontage road until you hit Rd. 21 and turn right. It's right there in junction. I would say any hotel in town would suit you just fine. I do seem to remember a holiday in at the next exit though. Rd. 18 or 19 exit maybe?

July 31st, 2003, 08:53
Well, i just got done talking to a couple of Local Wheelers here and they're gonna join us on 21 Rd that Sun. They're finishing up 2 of their comeptioin Rock Buggies ahd hope to have them ready to run 21rd with us, if not they've got some old Cj's that they'll bring. I did it with them last time and we made it all the way over the top and drove out the long gravel way up on the mesa.

As for a meeting place, i'd suggest the Acorn Conoco just south of I-70 on exit #26. That is usually were we meet up and then it's a short drive down the frontage road to 21 road where you make a right and take it all the way back to the canyon. For refernce exit number 26 is actually 22 Rd, so you just go 1 mile west on the north frontage road there which is called hwy 6/50 and you'll see 21rd on your right.

Keep me posted, i've got an extra bedroom at my place if some one needs a place to crash Sat or Sun night before Moab, and I'm hooked up good with the local 4x4 shop here incase anything major breaks, we can drag it back there and have it up on the trail with in a day. They've got everything you could think of in a fabrication shop. If you want to do the work yourself in the shop they charge about $20 an hour or LOTS OF BEER :D Otherwise it's $50 an hour for their labor rate.

Wally, let's meet up the road a ways. I can't get the motorhome into that conco, it's way too small from what I remember. We'll just meet about halfway between the frontage and the canyon on Rd. 21 in one of those huge ass flats next to the hill climbs.

wallysheata
July 31st, 2003, 10:34
Sean, there's a BIG parking area on 21 rd heading up towards the trail. There is a sign that says "21rd OHV/recreation area" we can all meet there it's on the right hand side of 21 rd. I believe it is right around the area where the pavement ends and it becomes a gravel road. If you pass the big Gas plant on your left youv'e gone to far. Why don't we say we'll meet there at 10:00am, Sunday oct 5th.

If you have any questions on how to get there, look at my post above, but basically, get off at exit #26, head north from the highway on the main road, hwy 6/50 and go down about a mile to 21 road and make a right. Go about 5 or so miles till the road turns to gravel and the OHV parking area is on your right.

I shouldn't butt in here, because I'll be driving to Moab from the west that day, but.........

You might consider starting earlier than 10:00, since everyone still needs to drive to Moab after running the trail that day. Anyone coming from a distance away needs to be there the night before anyway, and I'm sure would prefer an earlier start.

July 31st, 2003, 16:48
10 is WAY too late. I'm thinkin' more like 8:30, that puts us out there by 9. Someone will be broken by 9:30 and then the fun will begin. I want to be off the trail by 5 pm so that we can be in the campground long before 8 pm. It sucks trying to manuever the box around a campground at night.

I figure we'll see how far we've made it by 1 pm. We'll either turn around if we've been having problems or we'll head on cuz we're almost done.

I kinda forgot about the picnic table mechanic from MO too.

I want to clear a little something up for everybody, just so they know what I'm thinking. I'm/ We're not doing the entire trail. Droping in at the earliest spot is fun, but very time consuming. I'm heading on up the access road to where the big rocks are. This is way too fun of a section for me to be passing up since I'm driving right by it. I want to do some technical boulder crawling before hitting the not so slick slickrock. I really don't want to be out there all day as I do want to get on over to Moab as early as possible while still having fun with a great group of wheelers on some CO turf.

Oh, and we won't talk about how bad the Red Wings suck either :firedevil

Hey all, just did 21 road this weekend and with all the heavy rains we've had lately, the road has become impassible up top. I'm sure if we had some rock buggies and a few winches, we could move some of the larger rocks but it went from flat our knarly to no dice this weekend. Every group that went up turned around by toyota rock and most of those rigs were all on 37's locked front and rear with the usual goodies.

Check out Fatwrecks web site for some pics. www.projectxj.com

ton doesn't have ANY of his bilstein hardware......

I placed my order with them same time he did (for different stuff) while I had my own problems getting my stuff outta there, it doesn't compare to the run-around ton is getting.

if you think you can help, cool, but I don't think they actually HAVE stock......

that's the cause of both our problems.

Can you have Bilstein overnight it? How special is the stuff? Coilovers? Can you cancel and get it overnight from someone who actually does stock it (maybe Campbell Enterprises?) Campbell is right on my way to Utah........

I am still planning on camping out in the parking lot on Sat. night. Hope to hook up with everyone Sunday am.

I am leaving NC Wed. am. Working in Memphis on Thursday. Should be out ahead of the Kudzu/St. Louis crowd on Friday.

Soloing it, so looking to pick up a passenger out of another vehicle for some visitation, possibly a driver.

See you on the road. I will be on Channel 4

I am also putting a probably won't make 21 road notice out. If I'm there I'm there but don't anyone wait (like you would have anyway  )

Mrs. Bones and I are probably going the more scenic southern route to pick up a trail or two in CO if the snow isn't too deep.

Oh, wait, nevermind, I just remembered how big Bob is.

I'm ready to do this trail if everyone else is. Jes and I will roll into GJ on Saturday afternoon.

Damn, I hate to bring this up (yeah, right), but this smacks of another Sunday 21 Rd run that some nameless people missed because they couldn't get there rigs ready in time. Andy, I hope you and Jes and the others that can make it have a good time.

Sean, relax man. Don't be under too much pressure. :D :D

Well, I'm still planning on making it, however....having issues with the YJ, i'm going to try and get everyting done sat but we'll see. I need to replace the radiator, water pump, thermostat, Front axle, spark plugs, fuel filter and the vacume switch on the T-case before I hit moab. Most importantly, i need to get that vacume switch and the fuel filter/spark plugs, because right now the 4wd will not stay engaged and it's sputtering at low speeds.

Regardless, I'll be there, and will just tag along shotgun with someone if i can't get it working by sunday morning.

So what's the FINAL time, 9:00am at the trail head?
