Moderate and easy trails, beautiful scenery, good fishing and one of the best fireworks displays I've ever seen (in the town of Graeagle) and it's free.
We are going up late Thursday or early Friday.
Take Hwy 49 north through Downieville to the town of Bassetts, turn left into the Gold Lakes area, take the FIRST Gold Lake turn to the left and follow it down to the bottom of the hill (about 1/4 mile). Stay to the left, air down and dissconect. There is a campground at the back (west side) of the lake for off-roaders only. :D
This is the type of run for the whole family.

Three questions: How far is it from Sacramento, could I follow someone up, and would my dad's stock longbed MJ be welcome? It sounds like something fun to go on.

1. About 3 hours (depending which way you go).
2. Sure, I'll let you know what we decide about a departure date.
3. Sure, bring it!!

Ok, I'm in. Is there also going to be a meet and greet on the 3rd?

Looks like me and my GF will be there - going up Friday morning. Hopefully this overheating thing won't be too much of an issue :-\
Billy
The trail to camp..... is this something that a 1st timer in a stock YJ could do without killing their vehicle? How does it compare to say, Kyburz? We had plans to go camping at Icehouse with my sis in-law but this sounds fun. She is just a bit nervous about draggin her DD across rocks.

The road back to the campgroung is rocky, but not bad (DD YJ will be fine) . I've seen a class "c" mini motor home in there
Another way to get there is take I-80 to Truckee, go north on Hwy 89, turn left (west) on Hwy 49 and right (north) at Bassetts into the Gold Lakes area.
I'll put up a sign at the first turn into Gold Lake and one at the bottom of the hill so you will stay to the left and go to the OHV campground.

JP, when is your sister leaving Napa? That is, if she does go. I'd be up for a caravan Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.
How long is everyone going to be up there? Mostly until Saturday morning?

If you want, we'll join up w/ you when you pass through town. What time do you think that'll be? Is that it? Keven's still goin' right???
PS - I think I have the heating problem fixed.

Sounds good to me. Where do you want to meet, so I know when to leave here?
Still hoping to leave around 7am but who knows what reality will bring tryin to get other folks up and ready. It may be more like 9. What about firewood? Are we going to town Friday night for fireworks and dinner?
Billy, PM me your number again and I will call you in the morning.
Phil, I think my sister is coming up tonight after she gets off work. Looking forward to meet you.

Ok, I think I'll check this in the morning, and if nothing has changed, I'll go ahead and try and leave here about 7:30. I got a phone for the weekend, so if anyone wants to try me in the morning, I could meet up and do a caravan. If not, I oughta see you all up there. Number is (707)337-8066. Phil

This city is about 12 miles before the campground on 49. The site has directions, some pics of the lakes and a map. Go up to 49 in Auburn and head N. Eventually you'll hit Bassets and turn left on Goldlakes Rd.
I think traffic to Tahoe might be to thick to the Truckee (Hwy 89) route.
The wife's cell is 916-402-9790. I will be CBless for the weekend thanks to the local thugs.....but thats a whole nother story.

Sorry I didn't sort through them. Enjoy all the poser shots! :o
Billy, too bad you didn't stay for the fireworks on sat. Keven wasn't lying, one of the best damn shows I've ever seen. Beautiful country up there.
What? No pics of me returning the favor and yanking you out of the snow drift? You need a new photographer! :D

I've been on that trail but only to the campground. What lies beyond? Any good wheeling after that?

Do a search for "Grass Valley 4 Wheelers" or go to the CA4WDC web page (www.ca4wdc.com) and look for thier link under 'North District Clubs'. They have some pics of their adopt-a-trail (Snake Lake) and Little Deer Lake. It's not like the Rubicon, but there is enough there to make it interesting (ask the guy in the Land Cruiser, locked front and rear, that had to winch up part of the Snake Lake trail).
Where are the pics of the snow?
