87 4.0L. on the underneath side of the hood there is a black insulation type thing, just wondering if it is necessary? Should i just rip that sucker off?

you can chuck it if you would like to.... theres no real reliance on hood insulation for any vehicle

I ripped mine out because it was hanging in spots... heater works more than necessary even on the coldest winter mornings.

It is one of the reasons that my 1990 is quieter in terms of engine noise intrusion than my 2001. It really does soak up some of the under-hood mechanical noise.

i ripped it out of my 89', didnt notice any difference in engine noise, but mine is loud to begin with...

Its there for noise....thats all. Dump it....keep it....its up to you. Mine fell off about 13 years ago.

I was told at one time that underhood insulation is for fire suppresion. In case there's an engine fire, its supposed to melt the insulation and give you a few extra minutes to escape the vehicle. Its not there to put the fire completely out, just assist.

minenever had it.... i've taken it off every car ive had that did come with it..... it sucks to overheat or something like that and the insulation absorbs all the water and shit..... but its your choice, you wont run into problems either way really
