Ready for some west desert exploring?

We will be meeting at the Flying J in LakePoint Ut, at 8:00AM

This is at exit 99 on I-80(The tooele exit)

This trip will be an overnighter with a camp set up close to Wendover so People who can only come Sunday can still meet up and run with us then.

More details to come.

Ok, here are some tentative details for this little adventure.
After leaving Tooele we will head south to the Pony Express Trail and head west. We will stop for short stops along the way at a few of the historic Pony Express stations that are still standing but just a warning…We will have aprox. 100 miles of dirt road to cover Saturday.

That evening we should hit Callao, a small almost ghost town and head north towards Gold Hill, another mining ghost town. There is some mountains close by where we will set up camp.

Then Sunday morning we will break camp and head to Wendover where we will meet anyone coming out for Sunday. Plan on meeting at the McDonalds next to the Pilot Truck Stop at 10:30 AM.

From there we will head up around the Pilot Peak Loop road and spend some time around the Bonneville Salt Flat area and then head home from there.

A few things to mention….This is a very desolate area. Bring plenty of water, food and if you have the ability extra gas. Once we leave Tooele we won’t have the ability to get supplies until we hit Wendover.

Also make sure your spare tire is in good shape. That many miles of dirt roads is bound to make a flat somewhere along the way.

Can’t wait to see you there!

I will not be able to make this trip either:(
I can't wait for a trip when I will be able to go.

I ran the pony express trail with the family several years ago. It was a fun trip. I should have a bit more (plant) life this year with all the water. You do get the see the stark beauty of the desert. Simpson spring is quit the sight in the middle of, well no where.
As the Pres noted it is a long drive so if you have kids along to plan on extra entertainment.

Hope you all have a good time.

You should be fine...This is more of a exploring type run then hardcore wheeling.

I've got to work on Saturday but Julie and I will probably head on out to Wendover late Saturday afternoon and get a room in Wendover. From there we'll hook up with the rest of you on Sunday morning.
Sounds like a good time, Wendover & 'wheeling!
Let's stay away from the salt flats, if I have to get out of my Jeep for any reason I'll never find it again. :D

Would 2 wheel drive make it? I won't be able to have 4 wheel drive by then, and I'm trying to go do something in my jeep since it's been so long. Getting off work is about impossible too.

It would unless we decided to hit a trail out in the mountains somewhere. If you got low range and a place for a strap I can't think of anywhere out there you couldn't go....as long as its not wet anyway.

Wife wants to know how smooth the road is for the little one we have. Is one of the two trails a little smoother? I have to convince the wife that our 4 month old won't get a concussion on the road. :spin1:

To be honest I don't know...Most of the way out there is graded dirt roads. The problem is how long its been since they have been graded. If it hasn't been long its easy to mantain 50-60 mph across. If its really washboard it will slow us down quite abit.

Looks like I'm out on this one. Julie's family is having a get together for her B-bay.
I thought a Wendover weekend getaway would be fun but someone made plans before I did. :)
Why is the husband the last to know?? Heck, even Mrs Doc Moab knew before I did. :laugh3:

Right now the road is a little rough to the Dugway turn off but not real bad after that i'm not sure. it is wash board over look out pass as it is always. it was graded a couple weeks ago but we have had rain since. the main pony exspress is alot better after the pass, and you can do an easy 45 to 50 though i dont go over 45. hope this helps

About 30-40 miles...I think. But about half that on pavement.

I should be there with my wife and kid although the wife won't let me take my jeep. She says it's too unsafe for the baby. So I guess we'll be up in her 94 xj.

My father is taking his bone stock 90 XJ so you won't feel left out.

One thing I have found out in the last week....Right around Callao there is a good jeep road that takes off up into the Deep Creek mountains. It ends up at an overlook at above 9000 feet right underneith the 12,000+ foot Haystack peak.

If my plan goes right (yeah right!) it should only take us a couple hours to get to Callao. I think we should maybe explore this road! Take in mind though...I have never been up it and don't know what its like but I have heard its doable in a stock vehicle. If not we can always turn around.

It does have a 3" with 31's, but you always want to take out your own junk right? It only has two wheel drive too. Somehow the fluid ran low in the front diff and I think it toasted the pinion bearing. Haven't gotten around to changing it yet so I just took the driveshaft off, so she can still drive it. So my family has two 2wd cherokees.

I drove the Pony express in My stock Xj when i first bought it w/bad stock tires and explored Indian Springs Simpson Springs and Gold Hill, And never had to lock it in, So You should have any problems. If I make this one I will meet every one in wendover since i already had plans that sat.

Looks like it might only be a few of us. Either the the trails out that way are too tame or there are a bunch of pansies here :D Anyway Joe ya that sounds good to me....wanna just meet up here?

Kirby? Did you talk your wife into sleeping in the jeep yet?
Seth? You have been awful quiet? Still going?
Jared? Your car is running good enough. The BLM guy says the flowers in the west desert are better now then they ever have been in history.

Dang, that almost sounds bad,
I've been dabbling with the macro setting on the digicam lately is all, no real interest in flowers but I must say I've had some decent results.
anyway
I have been planning kinda last minute to go even w/ or w/out AC. Just need to verify funds in the ole bank account or get off work early enough today to make a deposit.

I should be by your place about 7:00am. I might need to leave earlier and swing by my office in Salt Lake if I can't get somebody there to do something for me tonight. If I'm not there, go ahead and I'll meet up with everyone in Tooele.
