angles on frame rail?

has anyone welded 3x3 angle on the frame rails. it will protect the bottom and which ever side i choose. seems like it would work. just need some feedback befor i get to the point of no return.

thanks guys, i was wondering because i work in a metal shop and can get almost all types of metal. so i was looking for some cheap protection. i was going to use 3x3x1/4 angle. i will do the plug weld thing
