no power : no start

out of the blue my jeep won't start... nuthin', no clicks, gauges don't even flicker.

jump started, immediately died at idle. jump started again, kept the revs up, then drove home fine except the volt gauge was pegged (19v) and "check gauges" light on. shut it down, tried to start, no good. zero power.

took a multimeter and battery shows 12 v. all of the fuses in the power center under the hood and in the passenger kickpanel test fine for continuity.

so, what gives? bad alternator? can i test for that somehow?

2001 4.0L

thanks in advance.

Terry, if you pull it, you can take it to any good auto parts store to have it tested. If the volt meter in the dash is right it must be working. I don't know much about the XJ's electrical. So hopefully some one else can chime in.

PROBLEM SOLVED! :D

found (thankfully) by accident... an apparent short in the positive battery cable.

whew, much cheaper than alternator or battery. ;)
