Engine codes

My 'service engine soon' light keeps coming on! how do I retrieve the codes? And where do I find the meanings to those codes?

91 XJ with auto trans, 4.0

Cycle the key 3 times ,leave in the on position .count the flashes of the "check engine light".It will flash in a sequence *** pause**----*** pause** Code 32,it will then go to the next code
A Haynes or Chiltions manual has the codes. Some parts stores can tell the codes also.
