I picked up a ford 8.8 out of a explorer today for $100. I am not sure what year it was 1994 0r 1995 but it has drums not not disks. Is there a disk conversion kit for these? Would it be a 31 spline or 28. Did I get a good deal or get taken? I know everyone is looking for them with disk.

all explorer 8.8s have 31 splines. as you know, not all have discs. one nice thing about discs is it will hold the axle in if you break a shaft since they are C-clipped, but breaking a shaft is highly unlikely, especially if you've got anything less than 36s and a locker.

They didn't get 31-spline axleshafts and disk brakes until '95. Prior to that it was drums and 28-spline.

nope, all explorers have 31 spline 8.8s. I have seen this personally at junkyards, and verrified many many times by sources I consider to be very reliable: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39343

As I have said 1.25 million times. ALL Explorers have 31 spline. My current housing came out of a 92 two wheel drive, and even it was 31 spline.

Well, of course, what would limit you from converting? I have 12" Chevy rotors and Caddy calipers on mine. Brackets by AA Mfg.

Exactly the route I'm going!

If I remeber correctly, you should be able to mount up disc brakes from a later disc brake 8.8. The only difference would be the ABS or no ABS. If you don't have abs and the donor does then you will need the shafts from teh ABS model.

Conatct ReiderRacing about some C-clip eleminators:

and check out the Ranger Station for TONS of 8.8 info:
