Transfer Case Q. - Inside part looks burned?

Does that look like it overheated? My case did not "GO", it was making a noise and someone said its a bearing, does that look like it could have been making that noise-not lubricated enough etc...? does that look normal anyway?

When you took the planatary apart was there thrust washers on both sides of the input gear? Cause it looks like the one on that side was damaged or missing.

That is a burn mark.

It looks like an induction hardened gear form.

If so, it looks perfectly normal.
