My poor '88 Chief that has to drive 200 miles every other day is getting angry again. Driving home today while going about 70MPH a new rumbling noise has developed. It's definately not the engine... could be tranny trouble or maybe (HOPEFULLY) a U Joint??

Only happens when the engine is under load and the faster the car is moving the louder the rumbling (vibrating the XJ slightly)

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

'A few thoughts to get this started for you . . . "U" joints, as you said . . . . tires (out of balance, out of round, bulging/coming apart), shocks, engine/transmission mounts . . . . good luck! Don

Shocks are only 2 years old... Clanking noise when shifting from D to R and back sounds like it may be coming from the rear.

ujoint, or rear yoke on rear end has come loose and is vibrating. Possibility also.
