PLUMAS NATIONAL FOREST SETS DATE FOR FINAL REVIEW OF ROUTE INVENTORY. OTHER FORESTS IN CALIFORNIA TO FOLLOW.

Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,

Plumas National Forest is moving forward with their OHV Route Designation Process by setting October 1, 2005 as final date to review route inventory.

The Plumas is working quickly to complete an inventory of all roads, trails, and areas used by off road vehicles over the next few months. This is the first step of a five step process to move vehicle use to designated roads trails and areas. The 5-step process is described in a Guidebook that will be used for the 19 National Forests in California, including the California portions of the Humboldt-Toiyabe. More info about the OHV Route Designation Process can be found on the web at: <http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/rwhr/ohv/route-designation/index.html>

You should be aware that the Five Step Plan OHV Designation Process includes;

1) Inventory 2) Prohibit (yes this means close) any OHV use except on inventoried roads, trails and areas 3) Begin internal planning process to evaluate inventoried routes and areas as well as begin public involvement prior to a formal NEPA planning process 4) complete a formal NEPA planning process that will result in a final travel plan, and 5) Implementation

Note: this process includes mountain bike trails!

BRC encourages OHV enthusiasts to help the Plumas NF complete the inventory. It is critical that your favorite roads and trails be inventories. Additionally, areas such as staging areas, tot lots or other open areas need to be identified. We want to stress that the 5-step process will ban vehicles, both motorized and mechanized, off any un-inventoried route.

ACT NOW! BlueRibbon Coalition highly recommends that all OHV enthusiasts get involved by going to your local Ranger District, get a copy of the current map, take it home, carefully review it and then report any discrepancy you find to the Forest Service. Even if it is a trail that looks incomplete on the map, or does not connect within a loop, or may be it is located in the wrong area, and worst case scenario it may not even be on the map. Share your knowledge and get your favorite riding area designated for OHV use.

If you have questions of would like more information, please contact Chance Gowan, OHV Program Manager, at (530) 283-7792. The location for May 14th meeting will be posted on the Forest Service website, http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/plumas/, no later than May 1st, or you may call Chance.

Thanks,
Brian Hawthorne, Public Lands Director
