my 4.0 89xj cruise control does not work. should I have vaccum, with the engine running, to the 2 lines that plug into the (module?) mounted on the firewall close to the engine coolant resorvoir? what else can I check? thanks

Yes you should have vacume and also check the brake switch and if 5spd it will have a switch there as well Assuming that you already checked the fuse.

check to see if your cruise control switch has gone bad. That particular design of switch on the turn signal stalk is notorious for going bad. The best way I can tell you to find the connector under the dash for the cruise control buttons is to yank on the wire while looking under the dash and see what moves. Then use a wiring diagram and your ampmeter to see what the problem could be.

The wires to the switch often break where the stalk goes into the column. To find the connnector under the dash, look for one that has a small piece of circuit board for the male half with two copper traces on each side that make the connections. I believe it is orange.
One of the four should be 12V when the ignition is on. If the switch is working, it should connect that wire to each of the others when you operate the three buttons.
Auto Zone sells the replacement stalk on their "Help" rack as a GM part.
